GRRR...

So I just purchased an ESEE Izula, (very good knife) I was trying to reprofile it to 40 degrees for an edge less prone to chipping, but even with like 40 strokes on my sharpmaker on each side of each stone, I can not get it to pop hairs. I havent cleaned the stones in a while. Do you guys have any tips?

Thanks,

Matt

it's already sharpened at 20 degrees per side (40 inclusive), but it is sharpened by hand, so there may be variation. its possible you're hitting the shoulder, just taking a bit of the coating off.

Hmmm.... so it comes from the factory at 40? very strange, I am getting a microbevel at the wider setting of the sharpmaker... I can see the microbevel. Is it possible that the stones on the sharpmaker are not very accurate? there is definite play but I would thing the natural resting position of the stones would be the 40 degree angle. I might hold together the stones with a rubber band and see if I get better results at that angle.

Did you ever get a resolution to your reprofiling issue?

I think you may be overthinking the issue a little. I personally wouldn't worry too much about chipping 1095, especially in a small blade like an Izula. My understanding is that 1095 isn't particularly brittle.

I know that the first time i sharpened my izzy on the sharpmaker i didnt have much succes. Did some extra time on the medium stone corners to really get it to the 20* per side. It shaves after the sharpmaker. With the UF stone its almost splitting atoms.

I sharpen the work edc izzy by hand with the double stuff stone and its also very sharp. There is a topic to prove it :)

I just resharpened my Izula on Monday with the Sharpmaker. The 30* inclusive setting was perfect, and as posted above, with the ultrafine rods it really does split atoms.

Yeah, I think the blade should be thinner then 40 deg personally. Hope you got the hang of it.

Upon arrival of my black izula about 6 months ago it was never "really" sharp.. Not like I like 'em, but I've used as is and its a great knife. Personally I'm not into all the sharpening gadgets they sell, I use to use 'only' stones.. but now I use a belt sander exclusively.. with awesome results.. I re profiled my izula and have cut all kinds of stuff and it will still shave hair...

you have to get into the coating with your re profiling to make it scary sharp as this blade is way thick...

I love my izula, did i mention that?

Rob

I sharpen by hand-as popular as these sharpmakers are I still think they're kind of gimmicky-you sharpen your blade once by hand in the field and then you have to spend an hour reprofiling it once you get back home in order to be able to regularly use the sharpmaker again :/ 4 inch 800 grit stone and wet and dry work great.
