Well, I am getting ready to order my first RAT - the cool little Izula.

Question is, do I go with the basic package or the whole tooty fruity?

I dont need the paracord or the cordlock - already have those. The whistle doody seems quite fun, tho I do have a couple of Firefox 40s in my kit already. I also have some MOLLE doodads lying around somewhere....

So its really just the firestarter, snaplock and the whistle thingie.....

I was thinking of carrying the knife snapped to a D-ring on my 3-day pack. Seems like a nifty way to carry it.... I may get a Tek-lok for the sheath some time.

Whaddaya think? Are the extras worth it? Or should I just get the knife and sheath and spend the extra dough on a Tek-lok?

Go for the whole kit and send whatever you dont need to me :)

Seriously? As long as the box that comes in the mail has an Izula in it, you can't go wrong.

When I purchased mine, I bought the whole kit. After going through several wrapping variations of style and color, I ended up finding out that nothing in the kit ended up on my knife. If I had to do it again (which I will), I would just get the knife.
Just my experience,
JT

Get the plain Izula, and maybe order a firesteel with it. You could also get the RAT fire kit, but I will warn you that it is somewhat bulky compared to a plain firesteel. Not bad, but if you're carrying it in your pocket it may be of concern.

I’m planning on getting just the knife. I’ve got pretty much all the kit parts: paracord, small mischmetal fire steel, plenty of those whistle zipper pulls, etc. The RAT kit is well thought out and each piece can be used in more than one way, but I figured I’d just assemble my kit based on what my particular needs are.

Save the money and buy just the knife, IMO.

Use the money you save and buy the RAT fire kit. IMO it's worth much more than the rest of the Izula kit. An Izula and the fire kit is a heck of a good start to an emergency kit.

I got the whole kit, cut about a 1/4 inch off the fire starter and wrapped it inside the handle with the paracord using the whistle as a cord end.

Nice little emergency kit.

That’s a pretty good idea, Joe. If I decide to wrap my future Izula, I’ll probably stick a small ferro rod in there. In fact, depending on what diameter rod you put in there, you could fatten up the grip a little bit if so inclined. Just have to make sure the knife still fits in the sheath! If nothing else, wrapping it gives you some extra paracord you could use in a pinch. Ahhh, I love this forum.

Honestly, I got the kit for my first Izula because I wanted all the bells and whistles that came along with it. My knife now doesn't use any of the extra kit, but I'm still happy I have it. For the extra $10, I think getting a kit for your first Izula is still a good idea, I mean it's only $10 :)

I'm getting the knife only. There is plenty of paracord, keychain rings, and similar stuff laying about the house...

The little mag. bar is cool as is the cord lock and whistle. They work well with the blade. Like others, my pieces of kit kind of got absorbed into other parts of my PSK and pack but it is safe to say that I use all the pieces. None of the little pieces are essentials, but they are really handy to have especially if you don't have them already.

I have plenty of firesteel already so I bought just the knife. I also had cord locks and Paracord which is what I use to attach it to my belt. If you have these already then just get the knife.

I just got the basic kit, and was planning to use some molle clips I have on it. Unfortunately I couldn't find screws big enough for the sheath.

I'd still have gotten just the knife, but thought I'd let you know if you were planning to do the same. Paracord works just fine on such a small knife to make belt loops out of.

I like the little cord end whistle and firesteel in the kit.

The other stuff I don't really use.

The little fire rod that comes with the kit is just barely too long to put in the middle of the handle. So with a little work I cut off the end (just some of the magnesium, not the striker). it does add a bit of width (with the wrap) to the handle. It feels better in my big hands now. I wrapped it while it was in the sheath (safer that way!) and the wrap doesn't get in the way of the sheath at all. I also added a Tek-Loc which works well. So with the knife, the fire-starter, some paracord and a whistle it does make a nice little kit. I'll take some pictures this weekend.

For my first one I got the kit. I had almost every thing already except the Molle-Lok. I felt it was well worth it.

There is one thing I did notice about the Molle-Lok, It looked like there is an extra hole drilled in to the Molle-Lok. The ones I have seen from other sources have three holes and the ones from RAT have four.
