IZULA tight sheath – How do I loosen it?

I just got my first Izula (#1325 OD for anyone keeping track) and the sheath is MUCH too tight. Any bead-ball chain would break before the knife came out of the sheath. I mean it is ridiculously tight. Any suggestions for the best way to loosen the fit?

Also, my RC-4 sheath is slightly looser than I’d prefer. Any way to tighten it a bit?

Thanks.

PS - My first impressions: The Izula is a nice little knife. I like it, but I think it’s overpriced. On the other hand, the RC-4 gets my vote for the If-I-Could-Only-Have-One-Fixed-Blade-Knife Award. Worth every cent.

The Izula: You can do one of two things. The fast way is to hold a hair dryer up to the sheath opening and make it a bit softer, then insert the knife. Let it dry. Remove the knife and trim off the excess plastic with a razor blade. I don't like this method, but it works. The slower (but prettier) way is to put some sandpaper (I use 600 grit) on the end of a popsickle stick and slowly sand the inside away (the nubs that hold the knife in) until it's the tightness you want. When it's there, run the sheath under some water to get the excess plastic debris out. Let it dry and you're done.

The RC-4: If you move the top-most screw to the other side of the sheath (there's an empty hole for it) it will tighten up. Here's a diagram from RAT's website (under "Sheath Only")... http://www.ratcutlery.com/rc-4 instruction sheet-B.jpg Play with the tightness until it's where you want it. If this still doesn't do the job, the hair dryer method above will work to tighten if you gently squeeze the Kydex around the handle.

The RC-4 is definitely one of those "only one knife" knives. Glad you like them

50.00 is overpriced? Everyone is entitled to their opinions....even wrong ones :p

I'm just kidding, as for the sheath, there is a small place you can put your thumb on to push it off. It's not meant to be ripped off of your neck

It'll also loosen up with use.

Before you try to modify the sheath, watch some TV and repetedly sheath and unsheath the knife and try to wear down the retention nubs a bit.

+1 , just put your Izula in the sheath and then remove it a couple dozen times, you will start noticing black residue on your Izula from the retention nubs wearing away.

Thanks JNieporte for the tips. Both sheaths are now just the way I want them.

You’re right SecSpyral, it’s simply my opinion. There are so many subjective and objective factors that go into the idea of a thing’s value that it’s not surprising opinions will vary quite a bit.

Agreed. There are surely cheaper neckers on the market and quite a few of them are good cutters with good sheaths and good features.

For me, the Izula is just right and I'm more than willing to pay more for just right.

For some people, the Becker Necker is just right and that's totally OK.

I agree with this. The BN, although I believe it to be great, is not an Izula in my opinion.

By the way, has anyone else notices all of the recent threads on the sheath to tight or loose? Or is it just me?:o

I am SO the wrong person to take opinions from on RAT knives. I am such a fan boy it's sick. I wrote a photoshopped diary for every day before the RC-5 hit the shelves. Every signature you see in this forum was made by me, and I have more coming. AND I am dying to go to bladeshow and bring a sharpie to have jeff and everyone sign something at our dinner meet up.

:)

The Izula is my favorite knife, hands down. I carry it all the time, and I own knives worth thousands of dollars. I just have this wierd connection with my Izula. IT's the best damn thing since sliced bread.....wait, it slices bread.....Dear god this thing is even better than i thought.

of course the other option is to get a new sheath made up in kydex

and as for over priced you guy get it easy US made kit is automatically double in the UK once our import taxes and VAT are added and its still a bargin

my Uzula has put alot of my much more expensive custom blades to bed and now i have 2 they never get a lookin

To sig line it or not, that is the question. :D

I got a pretty nasty love bite from my Izula, so I doubt I will ever end up selling it. Also has anyone heard when handles may come out?
