Hi everyone!

I'm fairly new to the survival knife world... and upon recently discovering the IZULA and RC4, once they arrive I'm sure I will get a lot of enjoyment out of them!

Now I've read that the nature of 1095 carbon steel makes it prone to rust in wet/humid conditions. Since I plan to use my IZULA to gut fish (on the fly in my boat) I was wondering if there were any precautions I can take to protect my knife since it will be in pretty constant use wet. I don't plan on wrapping the handle at all, since that would just be a trap for water and nasty fish funk.

Thanks for any help guys!

wash it off after you clean your fish, dry it and put a coat of mineral oil on and it will be fine.

If you know you are going to be using it in a lot of nasty and wet conditions, why not just use a dedicated knife for that? Something with a stainless blade? Maybe get a $12 stainless Mora clipper?

or better yet a $12 Rapala fillet knife . . . .

Or if you do a lot of fishing, you could invest a little more money, and get one of Spyderco's H-1 knives, from the Salt Series.

Well I'll clarify a bit. In the summer I'll use it as a fish gutter... but the rest of the year it will be my EDC. So I'll just make sure to clean and dry it thoroughly after each use as you guys said

Where does one find mineral oil for knives... sorry if this is a nooby question, this will be my first major knife purchase :D

"Babyoil" is mineral oil...you can get it unscented

Just be sure to rinse and wipe it off well and you should be fine. Don't leave it wet for too terribly long. I use my Izula fishing all the time, cutting bait, line, etc. Works just fine.

Mineral oil works but I'm way too lazy to use it. I'd have to re-apply it every day or two with the amount of use my Izula gets.

I love my Izula. But a decent sharp fillet knife is such a pleasure to use on fish. It is worth the minimal investment in one

The Izula is very good for cleaning small fishes
Since it has a coating the rust isn't much of a problem ;)

Whenever my izula gets something gross on it I just rinse it and then wipe it on my jeans. I haven't had any trouble with rust beyond a little discoloration that doesn't effect performance. The only time I oil my knives is if I'm not using them for a while.

I've used my Izula many times for gutting fish. I've even had it sitting in saltwater at the bottom of my kyak while fishing the inshore flats and backwaters of Tampa Bay. Just rinse it off with fresh water, dry it, and wipe it down with mineral oil. If you do this, rusting will not be an issue.
