I ordered an Izula kit today. This is my first ESEE knife and I am stoked to get it. I was wondering where some of you carry the fire steel and about how long it is? Is it something you stick in your kit, carry in a pocket, or attach to the knife? Thanks.

The fire steel in the kit is 2.5 inches. It has a hole drilled in it so you could run some 550 para thru it and attach it that way. Some modify their sheaths and make an attachment point for it. Others seem to just put it in their kit. Congrats on the purchase...you're gonna love it

I have two, one I keep in a survival tin with my ESEE-4 and I keep the other attached to a zipper pull on my backpack. Just about every zipper pull on my day pack has some survival tool attached to it. Key rings, mini LED lights, whistle, etc..

The flint that comes in the Izula knife kit you are referring to it is about 2 7/16" long (I actually measured it for you). I got a better handle on it by putting it on a small keyring. This can go in a kit or in my pocket, depending on where I will need one next.

Thanks. I was really curious how long it was. It didn't look that long in the pic I saw of it. Hopefuly some of the others will throw me some ideas of how they carry thiers. I like the idea so far.

The Magnesium/ferro rod that comes with it is a great addition to a PSK, as it is small, but is a reliable source of sparks when you may need them.

Please excuse the ignorance. What is PSK?

I got a Izula yesterday and a DPx HEST knife today! They seem more practical than my bigger knives. Now I'm trying to think of the right way for me to carry them.

Friends, and how to use fire starter affects the sharpness of the blade. Surely it is becoming less acute. After this it is necessary to sharpen a knife?

i got around dulling the blade on my izula on a ferro rod by putting a small notch near the tip, on the spine for a striker. Just used a dremel with a sanding drum close to the diameter of the big ferro rods. Throws massive sparks, doesn't gouge the ferro rod and makes the knife look like a rhino :D I also stripped the coating and added some more jimping for traction

Be for warned, I had a few items attached to my zippers in the past. We got to camp 7 miles down the beach in Washington State. I went to pull up my lighter, and it was gone. Not only was the lighter gone, the zipper had broke off it.

Having larger items attached to zippers lends it self to snagging on branches when going through wooded areas. (this is what I suspect happened to mine) If they are on your pack, and you feel resistance, you just pull through, thinking it was just a branch that grabbed on.

In my opinion, I would not hang life saving tools like a fire kit on the outside of my pack.

Best,

Good advice! No, great advice!

The fire steel fits nicely on the outside of the sheath and can be secured with a ranger band (piece of bike inner tube) around the sheath. I have one Izula sheath set up as a neck kit with a whistle and the fire steel. Whenever I head out, I drop it around my neck and I'm out the door.

But first I stick my hands in both pockets to make sure I have about 3 other means of fire with me. :D
