Has any one on the forum had problems with the handles cracking on Henckles kitchen knives? Have a set that is about 12 years old and noticed the other day the three of them are cracked ... I have always washed them by hand (never in the dishwasher).

Yes, absolutely. Whatever that "indestructible" black plastic is it gets brittle over time and almost invariably cracks it seems. I've rehandled many of these knives and seen it on many many knives of friends. It's not just dishwashers, like you said as I'm rehandling some carbon Sabatiers right now that have that same material and same exact problem. Many plastics get brittle with age and I think the one they use(d) (although I have 2 Henkels that are only 6 years old that have cracked) is particularly bad about this. The pressure from the compression rivets eventually cracks them and it doesn't seem like it matters how gentle you are with them. It seems like planned obsolescence, or else they just didn't know. . . neither option is particularly good.

The molded polypropylene handles seem to last very well. I assume they mold them over a partial tang with bumps or notches to prevent them separating. We have a 6" thin chef that has seen daily use for over twenty years and the handle is as solid as the day we bought it.
