J. D. Smith MS Folder

Rare to see ANY work by JD, and especially a folder. Somehow this is the first one I have encountered. That said, my first impressions were extremely favorable.

JD gave a seminar in filework at an ABS hammer-in I attended, and this knife shows just why he was such a good teacher. Very accurate, and varying styles. Just right.

I couldn't get everything this knife offers in my shot so here is one that shows the blade spine with his small fuller ground all the way down.

I'm looking forward to working with JD and Jim T. again soon. Thanks for the post!

That's a beautiful knife. I can't recall ever seeing a folder by J.D. before.

Coop, Thanks for the additional view. You did a great job photographing this knife. J.D. told me that he hadn't made a folder in 5 years. I hope that changes. Jim

Thanks to all who appreciate my work. Although I have made well over 50 folders, few arrive on the secondary market. The result is that most don't even realize I make them, but indeed I do. Mostly I make only what's interesting to me at any given moment, that's liable to be a variety of different styles and I never ever repeat any piece,no fun in that. Please keep a watch out for some new pieces from my shop in the near future.

Very interesting and gorgeous folder JD. I do recall having seen other folders by you and if I recall you had some when you attended one of Wolfe's Bayfield shows unless I have confused my "Smiths". Very imaginitive styling and use of the materials and colors. As usual Coop has excelled in his photo presentation.

J.D., I always keep an eye out for your knives. I visit hammersmithknives.com on a regular basis, and you need to post more photos of your knives there.

J.D. Smith is an extarordinary maker. He does'nt get enough pubicity.I remmember when I 1st got into customs I went to the N.Y.show.It was around 1997 or 98.I fell in love with one of J.D's folders. It had an ironwood handle, damascus bolsters and blade,a turquoise stone in the thumb stud.Beautiful filework with card markings on the inside(diamonds,spades,hearts,etc.).I kept going back to his table checking that folder out.J.D.told me the price and it was more than I had.He asked me if I wanted any of the other folders but I really wanted that one.I told him I'm going downstairs to the ATM cash machine.I took every $ I had out of it.When I got back to J.D.'s table I found out I was still at least $75 short. He saw how bad I wanted that knife and sold it to me for what I had.J.D.told me about the folder and as I was leaving he asked if I had enough money to get the subway back home.I checked my pockets and they were empty. He gave me a dollar and said good bye.
This was my 1st encounter with a custom maker and I never forgot it.J.D.saw a young guy who was new to custom knives and gave me a break. He saw how much I liked that folder. It was a very nice thing to do.
Thanks J.D.

No, sorry it was 1992. I remember because the week I was working on that knife you bought from me was Columbus day week and it was the 500th aniversary of his voyage.

Robb,

What a great story you've shared with the forum, on your JD Smith custom.

Any chance you could post a picture? I'd love to see it, as well as any other JD Smith customs out there, given their rarity.

jjtrj, 2 more beautiful knives from J.D.I'm not into fixed blades much but that one is a work of art.
