This project has been a long time in the works. :)

Early this past summer, I got a call from Cooper Firearms of Montana. They are a rifle manufacturing company located just up the road from where I used to live. They make rifles from standard “stock” models all the way up to full on “custom”.

They pitched me an idea of making a run of custom rifles with matching hunting knives to sell together in a very nice high end set that would include a custom rifle, matching knife with a handle made of the actual same piece of wood as the stock of the rifle, a custom leather sling for the rifle and sheath for the knife all in a nice display box.

I was all in on the idea. They wanted to do an initial small run as a test to debut at the SHOT show in Vegas. I sat down with the fine folks at Cooper and we discussed and came up with a prototype idea. I was asked to make a trailing point (upswept tip) hunter for them. I made the prototype and they were happy with it.

They wanted to see some other interpretations of their ideas and asked me if I knew any other knifemakers who would be a good fit for this project. I, without hesitation, thought of my good friend and mentor, M.S. Jon Christensen, who lives basically right across the street from Cooper’s office and facility. I gave them some other names as well but they decided Jon was the right fit for the other half of this project.

Jon met with the Cooper executives also and came up with a prototype knife which they also loved. It was decided that Jon would make half the knives for the initial run out of his own Damascus and I would make the other half of the knives for the initial run with a mono steel blade using the clay quench process to create a hamon, an idea they also liked.

We are still discussing a final number of these knives in the run but it looks like there will be at least 5 from each of us. The Cooper Company has done an AMAZING job finding some truly incredible wood blanks for their stocks and the knife handles. There is not a knifemaker among us who wouldn’t love to cut them all up for knifehandles. ;) The people at Cooper are REALLY great people and are wonderful to deal with. Their quality firearms are among the best out there and Jon and I are proud to team up with them on this.

So here is my first production knife in the series:

Specs:
Handforged from 1075 steel, clay quenched and etched
8" overall, 3 5/8" tip to guard
Heavily rounded spine and ricasso edge for comfort
German silver guard
German silver and blued and coined spacers
Feather Claro (I think) Walnut from Cooper's own private stockpile
Inlaid German silver engraving coin on the butt end for Cooper to engrave their company logo

All comments and discussion welcome.

Here is the first knife of Jon's.
Specs:
Jon's own mosaic damascus steel (this blade has MASSIVE chatoyance)
8" overall, 3 5/8" blade
Coarse layer twist damascus guard with 416 ss spacers
Coarse layer twist damascus spacer and buttcap
Walnut handle
Checkering and engraving by Cooper Firearms

If Cooper provides the pictures of the guns with the knives, I'll post them too. Thanks for looking.

John,

A great idea all around; giving custom rifle enthusiasts an introduction to real custom knives.

The kinds of detail work you've done on this hunter is just what new custom knife owners need to see, as a change from the production or commercial knives they are probably familiar with.

I note the nicely rounded spine, the hamon itself, the raised and rounded-over transition of handle to fitting, the coining, that lovely straight ricasso grind line, the delicate lines of the guard, and the recessed butt-coin, with your over-all high finish level.

This, along with Jon's work, will open some eyes! Good for all involved.

Absolutely beautiful. I would love to see an image of the whole set this one belongs to.
Thanks for sharing.

Awesome all the way around...!!!

Jon is an outstanding bladesmith, and an even better person--- we don't see enough of his work around here. I'm really looking forward to seeing Jon's 5.

Good on you, for all facets of this John.

Love your work... I'd spot this as one of your hunters from across the room. I'm excited to see the rifle, sling, and sheath that go along with this one!

Coopers are outstanding rifles (I still regret not buying that .17 Remington in 2003), and you make some of my favorite knives. I can't wait to see where this goes.

This is really cool John! The knife is great as always and the project is a wonderful idea. Hopefully it will help some collectors crossover to custom knives as well.
Congrats to everyone involved, I look forward to seeing some pics of everything all together.

John, Glad to see this come to together. Both you and Jon are offering great knives to go along with Cooper Firearms.

Thanks for sharing

First off I'd like to thank John for mentioning my name to Cooper Firearms. It means a lot to me my friend.

It's an exciting project. Lots of potential for exposure for not just us but the entire custom knife community. The folks at Cooper Firearms have been great to work with.

If you are ever in this area it is worth getting a tour of their facility. I don't think I have ever seen a cleaner safer work environment before.

Jon

Jon, Are you saying knifemakers shops might not be as clean and safe as Coopers? I thought you could eat off the floor and all machines had guards in a knifemakes shop.
Congrats again, Gary

Thanks for the comments guys.

Nick- I agree about Jon's work.

Gary- sheaths are going to be made by the same leather crafter that will make the slings for the rifles.

You could eat off the floor of Jon's shop (on some days ;) )....................Not sure about the rest of ours. You wouldn't want to eat off my floor unless you like grease, dirt, metal chips and shavings on your sandwich. :)

Cooper's shop IS amazingly clean.

Hey Jon

good to see you here...and I am looking forward to seeing what y'all come up with !

John - great work and a wonderful opportunity to work on such a compelling project.

Jon - This piece is terrific, which is no surprise. But your carved ironwood bowie is one of my favorites by any maker in recent years. I too hope we see more of you and your work in theseahere parts. :)

Seth

Bill and Roger, thanks! Will I see either of you in Arkansas?

Thanks Seth, that was one of those knives that came together exactly how I drew and envisioned it.

Jon, I'll be at Blade for sure and HOPE like crazy to be in Little Rock. It's my favourite show but comes at a tough time of the year in terms of my work schedule - it's generally a go / no go call at the 11th hour.
