Got an email from a friend who son is into seriously making furniture, and asks if I have any knowledge of a hewing axe made by the German company of J.F. Fuchs, originally in Canstatt, but moved to Stuttgart in 1933. Supposed to be the best hewing axe made for wood working, and had an excellent heat treat and steel. I do not think I have heard anyone on this forum mention a Fuchs axe before, but has anyone any knowledge of this company? Also has anyone seen one for sale? Thanks. John

Maybe J. Fr. Fuchs?

Looks like quite a tool if that is what your friend was describing.

Those are the same photos my friend sent me, thanks for posting them. Must be a highly regarded axe if that price is any indication. John

Peter follansbee kinda made that axe famous among green woodworkers.hes one of the best known bowl/spoon carvers out there. Your best bet would be to find a good smith who can copy the pattern. Originals seem to be made from gold these days.its a nice pattern but really it's just a broad bladed single bevel hewing axe. There are other axes out there that could do the job just as well to be honest. The blade is somewhat dished to scoop out chips, that makes it a bit different than flat backed hewing hatchet s.Though it's a cool old axe and I can't blame anyone for wanting one

That depends... Another one sold for about $37 but there was no option for shipping to the USA.

Yea no doubt. When a dude that's one of the top in his field says of a piece of equipment "it's the best" that will drive prices through the roof. Especially in a axe that's hard to find anyway

I have to have something made by that company. My ancestors are from Germany and the surname was Fuchs and it was changed after coming to America. My search for my holy grail just started.
