Wanted to share some pics of this small hideout dagger I commissioned from J. Neilson last year. Someone on this forum posted a link to J.'s site, where his wife Tess also makes sheaths. The thread was all about her sheaths, which are fantastic by the way, but I noticed the great knives. I wrote to him then and asked him to make me one of his "Chessboard" daggers that I had seen on his site. There he shows one done in black and white micarta, but I asked him if he could do red and white using rucarta and white micarta. He agreed and here it is.

At my request he did some follow up work to dehorn the sharp 90 degree edge where the index and middle fingers grip the knife. He also removed some minor tool marks from the blade left by the scotchbrite belt during final polish to a satin finish. You may see those and the old sharp curves in one of the pics.

It's no khuk, but it struck me as an elegant little piece of steel and the workmanship is beautiful. I will probably carry it on and off, the sheath mounts horizontally on your left front hip and you draw with your right hand, but I thought it would be the perfect small defensive knife for my daughter when she goes off to college in a couple of years. It is certainly functional and definitely looks nicer than a Cold Steel push knife. And at 4" razor sharp it should do a good job discouraging any unwanted advances! (-:

J.'s wife Tess did a beautiful job on the sheath in heavy black leather with a very pretty stingray inlay. Total turnaround time was about 5-6 months as I recall, with no need to pay until the job was 100% complete; not even a deposit was required.

J. and his wife are great folks, very considerate and determined to do the best job they can. He emailed me several times wanting to know specs on whether I wanted right or left hand draw, sent several sets of pictures, and did the polish rework and dehorning of the gripping curves at no extra charge.

His website is http://www.mountainhollow.net/ if you're interested. He makes many, many different styles of knives.

As I figure I will eventually part with this one, I was thinking of the same style knife in damascus, with Ivory and Ebony contrasting handles. (?) It would be gorgeous, but maybe too expensive I'm afraid.

Here are 4 pics of the knife, and one pic of my dedicated assistant (and foot warmer) Barkley The Wonder Dog, who can't believe Dad is still typing on the computer rather than going to bed! :)

Regards,

Norm

P.S. A couple of the pics were J.'s and were really beautiful, but I had to decrease color depth to get them under the size limit for the forums, so any poor quality is my doing.

The attention to detail and finish is top shelf, and the filework is a nice touch.
I once wanted Tess to make me a sheath for a special khukuri, but as she never made one before, and wanted to only provide the very best, she opted not to accept my request. She does make very elegant and well made sheaths.

There are some really nice knives on the website, and considering the high level of finish and craftsmanship, the prices are excellent. Being that the owners are nice folk too only added to the pleasure of your order...

Looks like Barkley The Wonder Dog somehow got into your beer stash before he camped out under your desk! :D

Thanks for sharing...

That's beautiful. I have a custom "Beast" Bowie by Mr Neilson, he does fine work and is improving all the time. That is one heck of a package, the handle and the sheath are really something else!

J and Tess do beautiful work and the push dagger is one of the nicest I've seen. Your daughter will be well protected with such a knife.

Norm that's too pretty for a man too carry. :p Good thing you got it for your daughter. She should be very proud to carry such a piece as well as being well protected.:D

Well, of course, REAL men carry khuks on the street! My 21" Chitlangi isn't made for any girly men, and is my every day carry blade. :D

But seriously, that's what I figured as well. It's almost like the old "garter knife" women would carry under their skirts. It was the one knife type I did not own though, so thought I would get an example of the type for my collection. It was also one of the reasons I wanted the center section dehorned.

As far as my carrying it, it is just the thing to wear under a nice suit coat on your belt. I have many more "manly" knives as well, but not this concealable, excluding folders of course. The handle also will not "print" like the kraton handle on a Cold Steel push knife would. I figure better the 4" push dagger in your hand than the Bud Nealy 6" Tanto fighter sitting at home! :)

I have taught Lauren basic punching and striking with the heel of her hand at home on a heavy bag, so using this correctly should be an easy transition for her, especially as she gets stronger. Beats the hell out of the old "car keys gripped in the fist" stuff the cops are always telling women is the best way to fight off attackers. This and a mini-Glock will go a lot further, and she will get a kick knowing that it is a one of a kind.

Norm

While lookin' at the thumbnails, it looked like you were stickin' the dog with the knife in the last pic.

I have a pretty active imagination though.

I love push daggers, too bad they are sooooooo illegal to carry.

Recently I was ordering from a police supply catalog. I use $1 carabiners regularly- made in China, but great for keys, and many other things.

Paid $9 for a real climber's carabiner- always wanted one- they don't sell at Home Depot. Rated at 1000's of pounds.

You know, that dang thing fits over my knuckles perfectly- comfortable to grip... It's not a brass knuck, or a weapon at all... looks normal on your belt.

Remember, I didn't say they made a great legal brass knuck. I was just... hmmm, looking for my keys. Any rock climbers out there?

Ad Astra (get the locking one)

I don't doubt it! That's my non-lethal big toe! (-:
