This is a bit overdue but I promised Jason an honest review of his folders and to leave him a feedback on his knives and yes a promise is a promise. I'm a new knife collector/ user and my first knife like many other in this forum was a Spyderco Endura. Cheap (relatively), with great ergonomics and using very decent materials. Most of the knives I have are predominantly Spydercos.
Though I have a few framelocks they were all designed for the right handed user. A custom was the only way I could get a framelock that is lefty friendly. J.T. Clark is one of the many talented makers on BF and over the last 2months or so I've gotten 2 folders from him. I'm not sure but I believe this is the first time he's made a lefty knife but it's safe to say they turned out really nice.
Fit and finish on both knives exceeded my expectations. I used to think only big companies with pre-programmed machines could make such nice knives. I'm glad to say I'm wrong. Both knives lock up tight and every detail was as I had specified. The ergos are superb. They fit my medium sized hands well and has so far been comfortable to use for light chores around the house. I'm glad no jimping was done on both blades as I find I don't really need them. I'm not a heavy user but I'm sure they would stand up to such tasks fairly well. Both knives flips open well with a light flick of the wrist. This may be due to the thick stock used on the blades and the (not very sure) nylon/synthetic washers used at the pivot point. BTW I used a needle to scratch away a bit of the etching just so I could find the will to use them. These knives (prob. all my knives) are not an investment, I consider them a small reward for myself.
A lot of effort went into these knives and I can say I've new found respect for knifemakers, especially those who practice their craft while juggling a full time job and family. I doubt many makers make a lot from their knives but I'm sure their passion and interest keeps them going. Throughout the design and making stage communications via email was smooth and I've found him to be a great guy to deal with. I'm glad to say my first custom knife experience was a very pleasant one.
Both knives are excellent value and allows the common man access to custom knives without breaking the bank. Sorry for the quality of the photos, I have slight tremors from an old service injury to my right hand and I do not have access to a tripod. Enjoy the photos and thanks for viewing.
