Uh-oh Joss, i hope it wasnt my email that got you looking at JWS knives!
Id be very unhappy if you ordered one based on my recommendation and got a rare bad one. On the other hand, with JWS, thats awfully rare.
I was playing with my recurve framelock last night as a matter of fact, the larger model with red CF overlays, man, does this guy know how to make a knife! I love his actions, theyre stiff, not too easy to open, and yet super smooth at the same time. Often, i think a maker will sort of "fool" you into thinking the action is very smooth, simply by having very little tension on the blade, so it feels smooth, when in fact, its more "easy" than smooth, if you get my meaning, whereas, his knives are smooth, but stiff, like Obenaufs, also stiff, but smooth and precise. You cant go wrong with a JWS for $400!!!
Also, along with Mayo, Carson, Obenauf and the like, JWS clearly puts some time into making sure his liner and framelocks are engaging the blade perfectly, which to me is a key element of a folder. I cant tell you how many makers cant seem to get this right, but JWS has it down, as far left as possible while still having enough engagement, and the liner and blades faces are correctly angled relative to each other. That's what i like to see, a maker who wont let a knife out of their shop with a bad lock, i have yet to see a porrly fitted lock on a JWS, having examined a bunch of his knives. Show me a new custom knife where the liner/framelock is already engaging in or even near the middle, and ill show you a knife ill never buy...
