A friend of mine works in construction and he gave me a jackhammer bit, its about 1 1/8" in diameter about 18" long. I ve heard these things tend to be ground from SK series steels, what other types of steel are they made from?

I'm not sure what kind of steel it is but it is very hard under the hammer while forging. A mate and I use the large diameter bits for making hardy cuters for the anvil hardy hole. We hot cut steel with them the metal holds up realy well.

Moral of the story what ever it is don't throw it away its good stuff. Knives are just one use for a lot of steel.
