Since the jags come into the States in parts wouldn't it make more sense for the manufacturers to use 1/8" folder pivots. That way they could still be easily assembled but lose the rep of being el'cheapos because of the nasty pins they have been using. Also has anyone here ever reamed out the holes to take 1/8" folder pivots? What kind of reamer did you use?

Welcome,

They could, but considering how cheap they cost now, better pins are not really feasible. Unless you place a large order with the manufacturer, it's not going to happen. If you buy them online, they run about 7-8 bucks a pop.

I haven't owned one of these in over 5 years now, but if I remember, wouldn't they still qualify as el-cheapo's because of their cr@ppy handle material? I don't think they use the best steel for their blades either. I know someone recently posted what type of blade steel they use. Was is 440A or something like that? I think they were saying that it was german too. But I don't think that makes much of a difference.

Steel is 420HC, not the best, but considering that Case and Buck use the same... Also, handle material is Zamak and I rather like it. With some more careful engineering, they woudn't wear out near as fast.

Not trying to be belligerent, but I highly doubt Jags are 420HC. I have a 420HC Buck knife and its edge holding ability is superior to the Jags in my personal use. Surgical steel usually refers to a steel that is cheap enough to be disposable like scalpels and such. They use the name surgical steel because most non knife educated people thing surgical steel is directly related to quality. In addition to this, surgical steel doesn't have any definite composition, so they can throw basically whatever they feel or have on hand to make the steel.

Many companies whether famous or not, use 440A, surgical steel, 420, etc. mainly to keep production costs down.

Yeah, David's right.. Also, are you sure the handles are Zamak? Weren't the handles on the original Benchmades that the Jags were based on Zamak? I looked at Dawkind's pictures, and the handles don't seem to be the same; but I could be wrong.

David2584, I've found my Jag's blades to act very much like my Buck, plus 420HC is one of the cheapest knife steels there is so I'm fairly certain that is what it is. The reason a Buck or Case would hold an edge longer is because they are probably better heat-treated. 420HC can be an excellent steel or a poor one depending on how it's handled.

KentDog, I've always thought the Jag's handles looked nearly identical to the BM's they're based on. Plus I've stripped the Jag's down to their core metal and it acts very much like Zamak (Zinc and a few other things) which is also one of the easiest and cheapest metals to cast so I'm pretty sure about that too.

I may be wrong, but until I see definate proof, this is what I believe Jag's are made of.

I like the jag's skeleton handles cuz they are heavy, but then again I was brought up on brass handled taylor/seto's and such.
