How decent is a jag for a beater if you get one of the higer end ones and replace the pins? I am looking for something that I don't mind beating up when I'm out camping or if I have it on campus and have to toss it for some odd reason I won't mind if I can't find it in the morning or if it gets confiscated. I would really hate to lose a 42 or a 30 over something stupid on campus.

I'm not an expert at this, but I'd say a high-end Jag with replaced pins is second only to a Benchmade, and probably best for its price.

Your reasons for getting one are the same as mine.

I'm not sure what you mean by "high end Jag," but a reasonable price for one would be around $25. And personally, I don't think Jags are second to Benchmade (I'm sure you mean production-wise), but that's me.

By high end I mean one of the $25 balisongs vs. say one of the $8 variety. I didn't mean an actual decent piece, just something that wasn't as much of a POS as the others

Plus, I just am thinking about getting a few to add some variation since I can't keep spending up to $300 a piece for various older BM's and PC's the way I have been.

For 100 years, United States and Germany have been making the best knives. Somewhere along the way, Japan became a contender, using steel from the Philippines.

Right now, there is no difference between the German Butterfly and the Taiwan Butterfly. It's the same knife. That leads me to believe that the Frost Company is having the blades made in Germany and the body of the knife made in Taiwan. One is being sold under the Herbertz name, and the other is sold under the Jaguar name.

So, the only logical conclusion is that Jaguar is making the handles, Herbertz is making the blades and they are assembled here in America. They were using cheap pins, but there has been a flood of complaint, and as always, they eventually respond to the complaints, so the pins are improveing. www.BalisongKnife.com Thanks, JohnR7 <img src=http://home.neo.rr.com/johnr7/top4.jpg>

Tique, I'm not sure what the $8 Jags that you're talking about are. But if you want to add variety, get some rostfreis; I actually like some of them better than the Jags (the $25 ones). You can find them at John's page: www.balisongknife.com at only $12.
