Hi folks, another newbie here. Just had a question about repinning a jaguar bali. I can't seem to get the nails to mushroom correctly, and they only slightly mushroom if i whack it really hard. I am using zinc coated steel finishing nails and a regular flat head hammer, using the technique on clay's sight. Do i have to use a ball pein hammer to get the desired effect?

Thanx, and remember that cheapies need someone to love them too.

I never had to use a ball peen hammer, I just hit the end of the nail at a slight angle and with a small movement in my wrist at the moment of contact so that it would mushroom (pretty much what is on Clay's site). I am sure that someone else has some other ideas, but remember, it does take practice to get it right. :)

Oh, and BTW, WELCOME TO THE BALISONG FORUM!!! :D :D

A peining hammer certainly wouldn't hurt, and won't cost much (I picked up a small one for about $3.00, they can be had for less). I've found that you get a really good fit if you trim the nail/rod just a tiny hair shorter than normally suggested, and once the "mushroom" has started, pound it straight in with the flat face. This way you end up with a pin that's shaped more like this:
>---<
which is stronger than:
{---}

It also helps to polish or smooth the hammer face (preferably the ball shaped end), and rounding off the end of the nail (chuck it in a hand drill, and spin it carefully against a file) will also help.

When you start out re-pinning Jags.., it does make it much easier to round off your "stock" before peining. If you have a decent vice, just solidify the file in the jaws and then spin the head of your finish nail to get the desired rounding. Get's easier on about your third re-pin ;)

does anybody know were i can find some screws like the ones on the new BMs. in went to true value (a hardware store) but they didn't have any. would i just be better off using nails?

Thanx for the help guys! I think im gonna stock up on some more decent tools.
