Did anyone snag one of the new Clovis knives from the James Brand? I'd love to hear what you think of it when you get it!

Alright alright everyone - I just got an e-mail from them saying they're available. I'm holding off because of the negativity though!

I'mma be upset if it turns out to be really cool.

It's not. It's a "lifestyle" brand trying to tap into the knife market. The About Us section on their website reads like a perfume ad in a magazine. Spend some time on here or just browse the Exchange forum and see which knife brands are selling and being used — I guarantee you won't see very much at all from James Brand.

Honestly, it looks like a cool design, and appears to be made by Millet Knives, out of Idaho which is cool to see, USA made an all. But yeah, for nearly $400 you're in Sebenza territory and it ain't no Sebenza.

it's really funny... the urban dictionary says:
Hipster: A middle class or rich kid who dresses like a hobo. They are plagued with Alanis Morissette syndrome which makes them misunderstand and fail at being "ironic". Hipsters claim to reject the mainstream and sadly have no idea just how mainsteam they really are.

...Deep question: was I a hipster my whole life before it became a thing?... in other words, what if you REALLY NEVER DID LIKE THE mainstream???

I liked punk, the clash before it became super popular - but I still liked them after that point, because they still earned my patronage
I dressed frugally because I never felt like wasting big money on casual wear or office wear, yet I still had higher end suits because that's where it makes sense to have good quality cut and fabric
But ... I never disliked everything popular just because it was mainstream... so what am I?

Now marketing guys are trying to use this 'meme' to push stuff, which is stupid

hipster bashing talk is so common, I never even bother trying to make the point: 'What if you really actually didn't like most mainstream popular things?'
we shouldn't allow millennials to frame this subject in such a black or white way... like real life, it's much more nuanced

I will agree there are people who are superficial and 'try too hard' to not like the mainstream, it doesn't make everyone who actually dislikes most mainstream things a hipster
I liked punk music before it became popular, and continued to like it AFTER it became popular - popularity itself has never been a factor, I simply liked what I liked

Unfortunately, nothing. If you'll look at my profile you'll see that I am fairly new to the knife world but have rapidly waded into the "deep end" as it were. I had an opportunity to purchase a limited edition knife and I don't know a lot so I asked a simple question to see if anyone had experience with the knife. I was just genuinely curious. I have planned to buy a sebenza because by all accounts that is the reasonable gold standard/benchmark and I LOVE my Mnandis, but I can do that almost at will because of availability. There are supposedly only 300 of these knives being made so I was going to see if it was worth postponing the purchase of a seb. Turns out, probably not! So, I appreciate everyone's feedback!

I'd like to suggest the Ritter/Hogue RSK Mk1-G2 as an alternative to anything by The James Brand (TM).

Price is similar.

Steel is better.

Ergonomics are just as good, if not better.

QC is better.

Finally, if you're going to buy a knife because of the image or lifestyle that the company promotes, Ritter's image and lifestyle is promoting sensible knife legislation, which is a whole lot better than the "urban lifestyle/glamping" image that The James Brand (TM) seems to be aiming for.
