Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting my first spyderco and like the looks of the "james keating chinook". I'm looking for a new EDC and would like to get something that will hold up well. The knife would be for just everyday general use.

Does anyone have one of these? I wasnt able to find a lot of reviews online.

It's built for MBC (martial bladecraft) rather than actual EDC use, so it'll be large, extremely strong and heavy. What is it that attracts you to the design? The blade shape can be found on the Persian. which carries a lot easier. If it's brute strength you want, then the Chinook is pretty much it, but you can consider other MBC rated knives such as the Manix2 or Para. Pretty much all of Spyderco's knives will last you very long. On a side note, the Chinook is now in its 3rd generation, with a full flat grind among other changes.

Thanks for the reply! I'm looking for a heavy duty folder and love the blade design. From what I can tell its exactly what I've been looking for. I'll take a look at the Manix and Para as well and see what they are like.

Chinook is great blade (you cant go wrong ) but its bigger then manix2 or para , and bild like a tank .
btw , chinook you have on the pic is no longer in production , they making chinook 3 now with full flat ground blade , its big strong and heavy . if this is what you want. I love mine.

What generation do you have? The site I order from has the orginal one in stock. Wonder which I should get, I love the blade design of the one in the pic.

All three are fine knives. I finally got around to getting one last year (2009 :)) and was so impressed, I immediately went and got another for backup. I have no problem carrying it, I like big knives anyway. What really impressed me was the thickness of the blade right out to the tip.

It's a decent slicer, and with the length of the blade, works well in the kitchen. In fact, a rolling cut is very effective for continuous slicing, like an ulu.

If you like hollow-gound blades, go ahead and get that first generation, or the second. I am happy with my Chinook III but they are all good.

I have all 3 Chinooks and my favorite by far is the 1, next in line is the 3. The full flat grind on the 3 makes it a great slicer but it still has a nice thick stock blade so remains a hefty knife. The blade shape on the Chinook 1 is "better" IMO than the 2 and 3. Some folks don't like the hollow grind that's on the first two but it dosn't really hold them back at all in my experience. Any of the Chinooks would be a good choice but the 1 gets my vote every time.:)

Awesome. I like what I'm hearing! I apprecaite all the input guys, this sounds like the right knife for me. I'll place my order today and pictures later in the week once she is home. Now I have to play that awful waiting game...

What's the difference between the first and second versions?

Pretty much just the blade shape, the Chinook 2 has the same blade shape as the 3 but with a hollow grind
rather than the full flat grind you see on the 3. (The Chinook 1 is the knife pictured in the original post)

Reznik572,
I want to say a big "THANK YOU!", for this thread.

I happened to have a bunch of my Spydercos out this morning and then saw this posting. So I pulled my only Chinook out to take a look at it. I do not ever remember reading the "LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY" that was inside the box. Well, I just read it and realized what a special knife I have. So, again, thank you very much! I would never have discovered this if not for your thread.

The letter reads:

April 24, 2004

To Who It May Concern:

Spyderco is an industry leader in trying new innovative materials from our products made in our Golden, Colorado facility. Several years ago Spyderco imported a small quantity of VG-10 steel for a trial run of knife blades using this particular steel and chose our Chinook 1 model for our test.

We produced a total of 23 Chinook 1 models using this steel. One of the 23 pieces went to James Keating the designer, another piece was used in a raffle on our Spyderco website forum with all the proceeds going to Children's Hospital and we retained two pieces for our Spyderco museum.

The Chinook 1 knife in this box is one of the remaining 19 pieces we are selling to the general market.

Sincerely yours,

A VG-10 Chinook 1 ? Nice one

I have an S30V Chinook 1 but I have never seen a VG-10 blade.

Sounds like you made the right choice! I'm looking forward to your pictures/thoughts. It's cool that you're 'adapting' a knife like that for utility/edc use... I tend to prefer bigger knives as well, though the blade shape on the Chinook doesn't attract me, but most of Spyderco's "EDC" knives are under 3".
