Don't ask me why, but for some reason after posting the thread about VG, James Mattis came to mind.

I made one purchase from him, a Spyderco kitchen set of knifes he picked out for the wife & we are still using those knifes.

Still Miss James- He was a pleasure to deal with & his presence here elevated us all. Sadly we won't be likely to see the likes of him here again.
RIP James.

I still miss him. I only recently brought myself to remove his knife company from my list of "Favorites".

James Mattis. An epitome of reason and good will. Certainly, he is missed.

James touched a lot of lives in a lot of ways. He is greatly missed as are his wit, his humor and his intelligence.

I started a thread a couple of weeks back about the old BFC Chat days, James was a regular, as were Dr. Walt Welch and Rob Simonich. Geeeeeze I miss them all.

Strange i thought about him the other day. He loved when people used tac knives in peacefull crative ways. He quoted my description of using a BM 812 for making a fruit salad for a date on his site. I still regret that i didn´t buy an onion/garlic slayer when he was around.

rip James

I always enjoyed James's site and his posts. His warning on working with carbon fiber: "The pathologist is the last doctor you want to see."

I wish I had had more dealings with him myself. I only ever bought one knife from him, in the last few weeks of his life. It was a Calypso Jr. Liteweight with his "chai" insignia on it -- a birthday present for my dad, which he used for a few years and still has around (I think the edge got beat up eventually).

Yeah, I miss James a lot.

Hi All-

Yes, he was a really great guy and I loved his wise and whimsical posts. I purchased a Benchmade 814 Mini-AFCK and a Spyderco Sharpmaker through him and his Chai Cutlery company about a decade ago and they're still going strong.

His response to why people should be allowed to have decent knives aboard aircraft was great, "Hey, you need something with which to slice your bagel and schmear your cream cheese!"

R.I.P., James! We think of you often around here...

I only bought one knife from him, but went to pick it up from him in person. While his posts may have been the calm, elder statesman type writings, in person he was like a kid in a candy store. The enthusiasm and joy he exhibited while showing me some on hand stock was awe inspiring.

He is missed.

Loved James' pics, especially of Spydercos.

Somewhere around here, I have a CD of most of James' knife pics from his old Chai Cutlery website.

Couldn't lay my hands on the CD right away, but here's one of my favorites...

I miss James. I still have a copy of his "cat scan" -- always just thought this was funny. :)
