What can y'all tell me about James Schmidt and his knives. He had several outstanding folders and a dagger in the newest Knives Illustrated. Anyone own his knives? Does he have a website?

Hi Kelly,
I have only spoken to him one time so I do not know him that well. From what I have heard he is one of the good guys. He freely shares his knowledge and I do know of a few people who have become successful under his tutelage.
He incorporates a style that is evident in most of his folders even though each knife is distinctively different. I do not think he has a website yet. but there is a small write up on AKCA's site and a picture of one of his knives.
In adding my two cents, I feel his work is among some of the best out there as far as fancy folders, but what do I know? I feel the same about Tim's work as well as the work of 8 or 9 others.

Wish I could afford one of each.

I have known Jim Schmidt for about 10 years now. He is one of the most freindly guys you'll meet. Our standing joke is that the only time we see each other is when we meet at the NYC Show, and we only live 20 miles apart. I have been to his shop to hang around on two occasions. He has offered to teach his craft to me several times, but as of yet, I haven't taken him up on it. (I know it's the chance of a lifetime for a knifemaker. I'm an idiot!) Before too long , I hope to spend a day with him again.

Jim has instructed many of the better custom makers such as Delanna Warren and Barry Davis. You can definately see the influence he has had in their development as knifesmiths.

His work is magnificent. If I hit the lottery, his are on my short list of knives I HAVE to buy!!! If you have the chance to buy one of his pieces, do it. You wont be disappointed.

I learned from Jim too!Hit the jackpot growing up about 30min from him. I dont do the same type of knives as him but he taught me how to get the best performance out of my blades. Taught me alot about the ethics of knives too. He is an extremly sharing person and I finally have an order in for 1 of his knives! Now if I can just stand the 4 year wait.

Got a letter from Dellana, when I asked if Jim had a website yet.
Quoting from her email (with her permission):

"I finally got to view the writing about Jim Schmidt. It's nice people are talking about him. He doesn't promote himself at all and it's too bad. That was a great article on him recently in KI. I know that as of right now he doesn't have a website but I believe they are working on that. We had lunch with him and Linda in NY at the ECCKS and they were sounding very interested in getting one done. A nicer, kinder, more giving individual you couldn't find than Jim Schmidt. His work speaks for itself and he's had a tremendous influence on knifemaking. He goes back to the beginning of the current custom knifemaking times. He's an artist as far as knifemaking goes"

I spoke to Jim's wife Linda on 4/6. (Jim was in the shop!) They have bought a new computer and are very interested in starting a website. I have given her some info on hosting and FrontPage design. We should be able to see Jim's work on the WWW very soon. I for one can't wait!
