A few days ago I made this post:

Here are a pair of 897UH that I found just after the Schrade auction.

The dark one which I call a "blackie", has been left unfinished, unglazed and unsharpened. The collector I bought it from had several patterns of UH knives like this and said he acquired them quite a few years (10-15) before the closure. I recently bought another one just like it.

The second knife I call a "buckskin". It came from the same source and unlike the darker knives, appears to be undyed yet a totally different color base Delrin. It has been glazed and lightly sharpened.

These knives don't come around very often, and probably don't have much collector value, but they are neat examples of knives during production.

The prompting occasion was my nabbing another example that flew under the radar for $22. I was all set to pick up a third one tonight, but this one drew some flack (30 bids) and ended just under $50. I guess interest in these oddities is increasing.

Whoever won it, be advised that it isn't finished and won't cut butter, and the unglazed scales are so rough, you wouldn't want to use it even if it was sharpened and polished. It is definately one to put up and admire. And being unfinished, there is no packaging missing, nor an infernal clampack to destroy before you can coon-finger and chicken-eye it. One hint... these knives like to be called "...my precious..". :D

Hello Codge on your way over are you mate ?
No it wasn't me I only pay that much if its a one of 10 .
Then again I'll have to check my bulk bids and you know I'd just bid on with the wording
897UH with no picture .

Here is another 897UH for you to keep your eye open for. It is an SFO made in 1989-90 for Cotter / True Value Hardware with their Master Mechanic marks and special packaging.

The tang stamp is:
MM897 U.S.A.
STAINLESS

This is the only example I have ever personaly seen of this pattern, but they made several other patterns for them at the same time including the MM152 which I have. My MM897 actually came from a pawn shop and the box with it's white sleeve was found floating around on eBay.

That is very nice Cogde I have never seen one before .
I limit my seach to only a couple of sellers or i'd get carried away doing a Schrade search in peebay . Every few months i'll have a look at what i've been missing .
That MM tang is unusual I have a 34OT that has the normal tang but has a Master mechanic blade etch .

Here is another uncommon one, the 897UH dual shielded anniversary issue. Since the company closed in the middle of 2004, the aniversary year, it is uncertain just how many of these were made.

My first attempt at buying one ended in failure. A forum member sent me one from Canada but the knife was missing from the package when it arrived. It took me almost another four years of searching to find another one. And I haven't seen another since.

Codge i'm glad your not setting bear traps as I would be standing in one holding a 897UH with a big dopey grin . I'm glad you finally found the double shield . Vey nice just to say it modestly .
It must be good to find yet another chapter to go over being the historian that you are ,then actually hold the knife in your hands.
I haven't been indulging much with any more additions to my 897UH's at the moment .
I sort of wait for the anniversary of the closure then politely bid or buy some .
Not as a celebration but as a respect for Schrade and their workers .
I've noticed the backspring pin has some variations is that because of press rivot machines are different or are they hand done ?
And I though the Master Mechanic was made for the best mechanic in the workshop as a Award . Nowonder I come up with funny listings . I'll take some photo's but you are making me feel like a 897UH Golholm. And no I don't sniff them at all . Ok only to smell the staglon .
