I'll start with this rather unusual 116: A factory build out from 2024 with Sure Grip Handles. Bought for me at the Buck Factory Store by a good friend, I was told it was the end product of blades from an earlier 116 special run plus left over 105 handles from some Sure Grip test builds.

I purchased this one for the sheath. The maker got it just right. You can shake it upside down and the knife stays in place but still draws in and out nicely. Thought it odd that the two rivets were different, one bright and the other brass. Notice the pommel, the early castings had porosity and instead of discarding it Buck would plug the defect. I have several examples of this in my collection.

Anyone here remember the good ole days when "Web Specials" were actually special? Buck offered many interesting limited run build outs at really good prices back in the day. This Cherrywood 116 Caper was a build out of 57 in 2011. 116 Capers were not a standard catalog knife in 2002 but were included in the Klinkhammer Series I set that year so I speculate these blades were left over from that project. There is a build out list by Hubbard as a sticky.

This is the 2012 Chip Flint 116 Caper with a Buffalo Horn handle and nickel silver Elk inlay. There were 9 fixed blade knives in this series which ran from 2006 to 2014. I don't know why, but the only knife Buck did not include in this series was the 105 Pathfinder.

The 116 caper was the missing link in my black phenolic set, so when I saw a 116 on Bucks web page I snatched it up.

Trouble was it had a Cherrywood handle. So I still needed a black phenolic one to complete that set and now I needed to find more Cherrywood knives. What was supposed to end one set, was the seed for another set.

Then a few years later I found a Caper with a stag handle. Yep the beginning of another set. 😂
