I was going to get one of these, curious on opinions about the Janisong.
5.5 oz is kinda getting on the heavy side, I’m not completely sure that I would carry and use it.
Is the feature worth the asking price ?

S30 is fine by me, my steel snobbyness is kinda behind me (kinda) .

I've got 1.

The Janisong is uniquely designed & certainly worth collecting as a curiosity but, assuming it is not illegal to carry in your jurisdiction, I would not recommend it as an EDC because of it's weight, thickness & complexity. Any conventional bali would be better for that purpose

As for cost, as a collector's item, I think it's "worth" what ppl are currently asking for it.

As an EDC, only you can decide how much you're willing to spend on a knife that you're willing to use & carry which will substantially reduce its value as a collectible.

Oh yeah . . . I am super happy with S30V , was using and enjoying my Para2 Camy at work these last few days . . . Black DLC of course . . . was marveling there was no grind lines in spite of S30V being hard to polish . . .
one of those days I actually "needed" my REX121 and didn't have it with me 😖
Yes , once we have tasted REX121 where is there to go except back to the "vault" to enjoy our older knives . 🧐😏

THERE how's that for enjoying a rat hole.

What I wanted to say is I have not handled one but the general blade shape (think Cold Steel Ti Lite spear point goodness , that I wouldn't have to thin) and the handle shape (kind of blocky , neutral and longish) is really catching my eye !

thickness
You scared me there .
I started to think I misjudged the blade thickness (don't tell me it is 4mm ! ! ! ! (or more ! ! ! !)
At least it won't be as thick as my Smock (I'm thinking to my self).
I looked at the specs for my Smock and it is 3mm; in hand it looks like 4mm monstrously thick thing . . . all the waaaaay to the tip .
The Smock is not a user for me but a toy and a paper weight .
. . . guess I am just a wimpy distal taper kind of guy 😅 . YOU in the back STOP LAUGHING 😠

WELLLLLL what's 3mm on a . . .

3 1/4 INCH BLADE ! ! !
I thought sure it was over 4 inch !
. . . OK . . . I'm going to have to rethink this . . . I've got a new 36 grit belt in the shop . . . I think . . . hmmmm

I was referring to handle thickness.

How comfortably a knife fits in the pocket matters more than blade stock to me in terms of carrying an EDC.

I suspected that . I merely used it as a convenient segway into the topic of my feared and hated nemesis . . . the overly thick bladespine of the modern folding pocket knife that has been forced by it's designer to APPEAR heroic but in fact is less capable for most everyday tasks than the customer's average kitchen paring knife . . .
IMO
e.g. I regularly cut rectangles out of the sides of quadruple thickness corrugated cardboard shipping crates with a "wimpy" paring knife or other thin bladed fixed blade such as the Mora Thin (or one of my thinned pocket folders). A task that would prove significantly more difficult or impossible with a three or four millimeter thick blade. It's laughable.
Haven't broken a 2mm or less thickness blade yet doing this multiple times a day.

It is as I suspected : by actual measurement the brutish Smock is over 3mm by 0.65mm and oddly enough is slightly thicker down toward the tip than back nearer the pivot 🙃

However , I AM fond of thicker knife handles and regularly carry them in a belt pouch . Viz ; Buck 110 or 112 and have been known to carry two , count 'em two , Cold Steel Ti Lites together in one pouch ; both blades thinned and one of them shortened and Wharencliffe .

sgt1372 sgt1372 and Wowbagger Wowbagger thank you for your thoughts.

I’m holding off on this one, I was excited about flipping it about.
However after looking at the weight and how it works I don’t think it’s for me.

Got a hankering for another automatic that I don’t need currently Incoming .

I just saw a very classy (not) offer for a few in stock . Not a supporter of BladeForums so no link.
"classy" because :
no blade length listed
no blade material listed
charging ~27 shipping on top of the very roughly three hundred fifty for the knife.
I wasn't looking I just stumbled across it.

I'm curious what initiates the opening of the knife ? Just press in on the swingy thing with finger tips or use the jimpping all around the curve of one end of the knife ?
I suppose I should go watch a video .

It was available at DLT about 235$ and a few others.
I’m leaving you one in stock :p

THANK YOU !
Some how I forgot about the slide button.
I really dig the jimping on both sides near the pivot .
Hard to imagine why "the algorithm / powers that be " think this is more """""dangerous""""" than a fixed blade which , some how gets imported into this country .
I guess it comes down to showing off / "menacing" with it ?
Some shhtuf .

PS: late last year I bought a folding box knife that operates very similarly . It is held open or closed by large strong magnets in the titanium handle . Kind of cool because the magnets also hold one spare blade inside each of the two swinging parts of the handle . Quick blade change so I have a hook bill utility blade in there .

Thanks again for the education !

Seriously though I probably won't be snatching that one up.
I have spent tooooooo much on sharp things very lately :
Drunken
Second (this one blue) Spydie Chef
Jigged Ti Boker Brad Zinker Urban Trapper
. . . .er . . . and maybe a couple others . . .
it's gotta stop ! I gotta stop .

I'm going to pass on this model. Nothing about it appeals to me. Between being on an auto kick and having too many Spydercos already doesn't help.

Honestly, and this may be a very unpopular opinion here, but I feel like Spyderco is not innovating like they used to. They seem to be pushing their lightweight lineups (which is fine, I know they're popular) but at the expensive of their non-lightweights.

I was hoping to see a Manix 3, or a Para/PM4. I was hoping to see more blade steels and sprints this year.

I grabbed one for a good price when they first hit US retail a few weeks ago. It’s very fun to flip and much safer than a balisong. I actually really enjoy it.

Will I carry it? No. Will I enjoy flipping it while at home? Yes.

I totally get it, and I don't have any problem with fidget knives, and that's exactly what this is. That's why years ago I bought a lightning OTF for $25, and I don't regret it. Now that autos are legal in my state, I look at the serious models for EDC.

I've always considered Spyderco the "adult" knife company, that makes serious products for serious use. The Janisong falls outside this realm for me, along with Sypderco's actual balisong.

If it were a $40 knife, I'd buy one to play with it. But at PM2 prices? For a knife I'd never carry? That's a hard no for me.

I want one. I wouldn't expect to keep it, but I'd be likely to enjoy the novelty of it for a month or so before trading it in or selling it.
