I tried one on today for kicks and giggles at my local Outdoor World.

I was suprised at how comfortable it was, and the external frame helped me stand up straight (I usually slump).

I haven't bought a bag yet, and I find it more comfortable than a North Face Terra.

I was wondering what you guys thought of this pack, especially for a new person?

Also, is it water proof?

LINK!!!
And I fail to see how it is "green."

Double post is bad but I have a reason.
I believe this belongs back in WS&S as it has more to do with those topics, considering it is for those use, rather then in here.
Plus, it looks like I'll get an answer faster there too.

It stays here.

I have this pack. I like it. It holds a lot of stuff and it's lightweight. You might also consider some of the Kelty external frame packs.

I saw a few Kelty packs, but they didn't appeal to me at all.

@Ray, is your's waterproof or does it come with a cover?

@Ken, whatever

@Ken, whatever

Whatever?! Sounds like Mod Sass to me.

Your thread had nothing to do with W&SS. You asked general questions about a pack. Packs full under G&G. End of story. I'm not going to argue with you about it because there is nothing to argue about.

I don't have the Carson, but accessory rain covers are not expensive from REI, Campmor, etc. I went the less expensive route and bought a Coleman MAX 65L internal frame. It is suspension adjustable, hydration compatable and came with a fitted rain cover. About $75 and better design and construction quality than Coleman had become known for some years back. I tried it out last fall and was able to carry a decent load all day without being sore, which is important given my physical limitations.

The two packs seem to be about the same size and weight, the Carson having a rigid aluminum external frame.

Hmmm.
I haven't had the chance to try a coleman one (I love to try things like this before I buy, to prevent buyer's remorse).
what about a snugpak?

I have no knowledge of this pack but do have a Jansport book bag that's been an edc bag for me for roughly 10 years. I would not hesitate to buy from Jansport that's for sure.

My Coleman was a Walmart SFO, so you can go try one on if they have them in your stores. They seem to be discontinuing them. I think the Chinquipin is the size equivilant in the regular Coleman lineup, but the features are different. My store had them in red/black (MINE) and orange/black. Here is a shot of the orange/black:

I don't know if it's waterproof but I wouldn't worry too much. It seems water resistant enough the way it's built. I've never been rained on with it though. Put your sleeping bag in the bottom where it belongs and you shouldn't have a problem.
