Jantz Knife Kits?

Okay, I'm looking at getting a folding knife kit (this one or this one) from Jantz. My mom wants a nice fancy little folder, and I can't make one like that by myself as of yet (I really don't even know what all the pieces and such I need look like, things like that), so I'm thinking I'll get this and try to remake the blades myself. Has anyone here done something like that?

And.... if I can't get my own blades to work, does anyone know if the jantz kit blades are good knives?

Thanks, Stephen.

I know a custom maker that started here in town with those kits. They made great knives and he sold a ton of them.

He did it for a hobby first, then decided he liked knife making. Then he decided he liked it a lot. He used the kits to understand the mechanics of folders, and learned the ins and outs of assembly, adjustment and finishing. He learned well, and developed quite a following over a about three years.

Now I can't afford his knives!

They seem to turn out a good kit there, as does

I have heard a lot of good things about texasknife and their kits, but haven't ever bought anything from them.

I've put quite a few together. They are great kits and build a great knife. I don't do em anymore cause folders ain't my deal and I don't like making em. But that's not the kit, thats me. If you're looking at a fancy one, look at some of those VG 10 damascus ones Jantz has. I think its called the Bighorn or something like that. I made one for a rancher down TX way. He used it for castrating and earmarking calves and he had a BUNCH of calves. Said it was the best knife he'd ever used, really held an edge.

Knifekits has a really really nice looking damascus blade option for one of the kits now.. pricey but would turn out a great knife with some nice scales methinks.
