I am looking for a no frills Japanese/Cutler hammer in the 2 to 2.5 pound range...I tried Glen over at GS and he is still in transition to the new location...any other leads on one?

He was one of the guys I gave a shout out to, but appears there are about 10 others lined up behind me waiting for him to get situated! Strike one... !!!

Kenon Rain makes them... it'll still be a while before he does a batch, though... I'm on the waiting list.

Strike two...checked ed's site, none in the near future. Also, it appears from some of the posts that sam isnt producing any right now...and there is quite the demand for them!
It looks like japanwoodworker is the only site on the net that has them at this moment...but I am waiting to hear back from daniel prentice before I go with anything online.

I will make you one if you like my design.

If you are interested you can email me from my profile or PM me if you can.

I'm working out the details for a run of 20 hammers in the 2.5 pound range, IMO the best overall size for all around work.

OK, I'll give away one of my other secrets.

Find a double end forging hammer ( head only or whole hammer) that you like the face shape. A 3# machinists hammer will make a 2# Japanese forging hammer. It could even be a cross peen. Chuck the head in the band saw vise and cut it off about 1/2" from the handle hole ( cut off the part you don't want). Grind the cut smooth and re-shape the forging end as you wish. It will go fast with a Blaze 36 grit belt. Clean it up with a 120 grit belt and - Viola, you have a Japanese forging hammer (of sorts).

For a cheap and easy source for making special purpose hammers, the hammers at HF work good. A search on ebay will also turn up lots of old blacksmith's hammer heads that you can re-purpose and add handles. Ebay also carries the handles. Both are really cheap. I have purchases an old Japanese hammer head for $5 on ebay.

I took a 3lb ballpeen hammer cut the ball off and drew it out to a 2lb+ japanese hammer. I'm still waiting on one of Kenon's, though.

I see the larger ballpeen hammers for real cheap at a local farm auction, seems every farmer is on tough times up here and the blacksmith and odd/older farm equiptment is the first to go to pay the bills.
Im going to give that a try and will post a few pics...in the meantime Im still looking for a japanese for under 100.00.
