I purchased my first folder under a Japanese name for EDC,a Mcusta MC-11. The fit/ finish and materials are superb, and the blade is nasty sharp. I was wondering if anyone would recommend any of the other Japanese knife makers and why.

A custom maker I would recommend would be Hiroaki Ohta. Do a search for OHTA KNIVES.

AG Russell contracts a lot of their knives out to Seki City Japan. Seki City is like Solingen Germany or Sheffield UK.

I really want something with the company that produced the knife to have their name on it. If I buy an America knife, I want it make in America. If I buy a Japanese knife, I want it sold under their name. That putting your name on someone else's work stuff never sat to well with me. Seems to deceitful and unprofessional to me.Doesn't a good name count for something anymore? Or at least put both names on the advertisement. But what do I know, I just like to live simple and honest.

I've got a Seki Cut and a Mcusta. I like both of them. THey both have VG10 laminated blades and are very sharp.

Check out Japanese knife direct for a good source of Japanese knives. I didn't buy from them. but from what I've heard, they've got a very good rep. All the knives are excellent quality.

I am dealoing with Mcusta. One 0f its folder with stingfish skin alun handle ,vg-10 blades ,is pricing competitve.
Rockstead is very good ,but very expensive .
Tsuge,ts-9 with 4mm blade thickness .
Some folder of g.sakai is ok for price(about usd usd90) as it is made of vg10.
There are some folder of japan made of zdp189-ats34 ;zdp-189-ats55.

There is a lot of knife company in Japan - IC-Cut, Hattory, G-Sakai, Roakstead, MCusta, SekiCut, Kenetsune etc. They have more and better steels for blades. Many show superb craftsmanship, sharpnes usually ideal.

However in US market they all represented by US or European companies: Spyderco - many knives made by G-Sakai, best CS knives made in Seki, Fallkniven - all knives are made I suspect by Hattory. So to buy tem directly you have to do this in Japan - which is possible.

I bought G-Sakai Samuray Bowie with excellent SRS-15 steel directly from Seki - no problem.

Thanks, Vassili.
