anybody try the japanese hatchet from garret wade? I like the bearded axe look, just wondering how well it chops and holds and edge...

Get a Swedish axe they are much better IMO. I have looked at a lot of axes here and they seem pretty crappy. OK for splitting a little kindling but nothing I would pack in a rucksack for a long trip. The Japanese make some good woodworking stuff, its no better than Western, just different. A lot of people love their saws, personally I hate them, they are too flimsy and short, but thats just me.

Get a GB, buy one and keep it forever (comes with a 20yr guarantee)

I like the look of the axe. Does anyone know what type of wood the handle is?

Side note:
From another japanese axes internet seller:
"Differences in climate often cause the handles of the Japanese Axes to loosen. Prior to use, you should inspect the axe and re-fit the handle if necessary."

They are quite popular here, but we still call them knives. That kind of Japanes natas are ground very differently form axes and hatchets, and some of them are even chisel-ground,edges are much thinner. Most are hardened to RC60 and up.People use them on green wood. The handle is some sort of oak.
