Hello BF, I originally posted this question over on British Blades but was recommended to try on this forum as well.

Im creating this topic to see if I can possibly get in contact with Japanese knife makers who I may be able to meet up with during my time here to learn more about the way in which they approach the craft here in Japan. Im in the country now and will be until the end of April, but won't be able to visit any makers until early April onwards. If any Japanese makers read this and would be interested please get in touch, and anyone else who has any leads to any potentially interested makers, please let me know!

Many thanks, Mike

Can I ask you what kind of maker are you interested in?

Hello

Im basically interested in all types of knife making but I would particularly like to visit a maker here in Japan who uses traditional forging techniques and perhaps makes suminagashi.

Regards, Mike

Sorry if you already know about it but if you don't, I recommend you to visit Sakai city, a town south of Osaka.
I think much of the high end kitchen knives are produced here, some of them are in pretty much traditional way.

The link listed below is a website of Sakai blade maker's union and it has some contact information including telephone number and email address.

Thank you for the link to the blade makers union - thats very helpful to know! I have contacted a couple of its members so Ill see if I get a response. If you know of any custom makers that would be ideal!

Happy to see my post is useful for you.

The only custom maker I know of is Mr. Koji Hara.

The good thing is, he lives in Seki city which is known for producing many of Japanese knives like Sakai, Hattori and many others.
The website listed above has a contact page and most of the things are written in English.

all the best-

Sorry for the late reply but thanks a lot for the information, ill follow up on those leads and see if I can make something happen!

Many thanks, Mike
