Japanese sasano bori carving knife

Bumped into this segment on sasano bori carving on NHK Japanese TV channel. The purpose made knife looks sorta like a cleaver with a chisel sharpened nose. The thumb bracing used on some of the cuts bear a similarity to Sloyd carving techniques.
