Japanese style handle wrap

As the title suggests, I am interested in learning how to do a japanese style handle wrap. I'd like to know how to do it both with the flat ribbon-like stuff that they use and with thread like I've seen some people do. I tried a forum search but it's not working for me.
Can anybody help me out?
