Ive heard from a couple of smithy friends who have visited Japan knife shops of master smiths. That japanese blade smiths have there own power hammers with unique dies and a different sort of set up. Ive also heard that most japanese shop all have some sort of homebuilt power hammers. Ive searched the net and came up empty. Any feed back, does any one have a web site to recommend besides anvilfire,or keenjunk.

quite a few have glanced at this thread. Has nobody heard of a japanese spring hammer? Or do ya'll just not have a web link. Or is this rumor of a japanese hammer happen to be false? Replies greatly appreciated...

Sorry. Maybe they're all like me--I opened this hoping that you'd tell me about Japanese power hammers. I don't have any useful information for you. :o

ripper,
I like rusty and dusty, and am building one similar to those. The second photo is probably the one Ive heard of myself, I hoped to find better pictures of the guide assembly and die pictures....Maybe somthing will turn up...

In "The Craft of the Japanese Sword" they have a picture of Yoshindo Yoshihara's power hammer. I'll have to look at my copy this evening.

the japanese spring hammer looks a whole lot like a LG knockoff with whatever was at hand. Look at the LG pics. They aren't to complicated.
