I don't know much about these types of knives but I will tell you what I have learned.
I had wanted a traditional Japanese Hunting knife for years. While at the the
BLADE show this year I visited the tables of many Japanese Makers, I purchase a knife very similiar to the SAKURAMAKI in style, 4" blade length (almost a Clip Point design), black Iron Guard and an
unfinished OAK Handle and Sheath. The blade is indeed laminated. I think it has multiple layers of a softer Iron? exterior which makes it look like Damascus. The blade is absolutely Razor sharp.
I think the Kanetsune knives in question are sometimes being billed as Damascus or San-Mai probably out of misconception but possibly so that the knives may sell for a higher price...?
The wooden sheath on a traditional Japanese hunter is supposed to be slightly loose (as compared to a traditional tight fitting sheath in the US). I was told the blade should rattle slightly in the sheath making noise which would scare away Bears while the Hunter is walking through the woods.......sounds good if you are NOT hunting Bears.
I would love to have one of the Kanetsune with the Cherry wood handle and sheath.
Vassilli - you post great pictures, I always enjoy them. You and I seem to have very similiar tastes in knives, I really enjoyed your post on the Russion knives and have since been "visiting" one on the web (trying to resist the temptation to purchase).
