Japanese Water stones?

Are they really better than the normal synthetic stones? And if so where can I get them?

They are not necessarily better or worse. They have a different 'feel' and produce a different edge. And many of them are synthetic; that is to say, ground up and reconstituted with a stronger bonding agent. That makes them last longer than natural water stones. You can find them in various knife shops on line, and in better DIY and Home Centers.

They produce a different effect and have a better feel than synthetic stones but you will need to take out a loan to buy a set of them. I don't really see how a synthetic would last longer than a natural, some naturals are very hard and dense stones.

Get a set of Choseras and you will not only be able to tell the enormous difference, you will have something to pass on down through the generations. Nothing better. There is a reason why the majority of very serious sharpeners use them. You won't find used ones either.

I have natural stones, the Aoto I have known to be soft I could kinda see that but reviews say the man made version wears just as fast. The Awase To finishing stone though is just as hard if not harder than most arkansas stones, Hard enough to not produce a slurry on its own. A king stone for example in the same 8k grit would need to be twice as thick to have the same life span as the Awase To.

Some naturals are soft and wear quickly but so are some synthetic's, all depends on the stone and the make-up.

 And they are easy to use, because it is very hard to make notches in them.

I like the feel of it compared to a Diamond stone. It gives more response than just the grinding feeling of a DMT. This is all my personal opinion, I use DMT stones and Edge Pro to sharpen up.

Not sure about passing them down through generations. I have a friend who uses Choseras on his Edge Pro and they wear pretty fast.
