I have a 10 3/4 Japanese item from an estate sale. There is a knife & 2 chopsticks in a wooden case with elaporate bronze or brass mounts. There are some Japanese marks on the bottom and two rings were the object could be worn on a belt.
What is it called?

it sounds like you have a tanto length blade. Tanto blades are defined as nihon-to less than 1 shaku (approx. 1 foot) in length. The two "chopsticks" are designed to fit into the saya (scabbard) and are accessories that can be used for various things. Since it has rings (I'm assuming on the saya) then it's probably of WWII vintage. Post a picture of it, people could probably tell you a lot more. It sounds like a tanto in gunto mounts. Some of those blades are actually old historic blades that were remounted, and can be very valuable. Get it appraised by someone knowledgeable on the subject of nihon-to.
