Jared West at NRA Annual Meetings

So a friend and I had the chance to go to the NRA Annual Meetings this year and we happened to stumble across a booth for Quartermaster Knives. I'll admit we both have odd tastes when it comes to cutlery, and the bizarro styling appealed to both of us; so sue me :). We ended up getting a knife each, but in the process of paying the guy behind the table, I saw that his Square system was identifying him as "Jared West", despite him introducing himself as "Jase".

That name rung a bell, having had some negative experiences with Mantis Knives in the past, and once I got back to my hotel room, I confirmed that he was, indeed, the man not-really behind Mantis, once upon a time.

So, for those curious, it would appear that Jared West is trying to offload his inventory of Quartermaster knives, despite supposedly not being affiliated with them. And, yes, I checked the very few pictures of Jared on the intertubes, and the man I saw was the same man, plus some goatee action recently (plus my credit card statement shows a charge by Jared West, so there's that too).

If I had been quicker on my feet, I would have backed out of the transaction as soon as I saw the name, but I didn't put it together until too late. At least the knife is nifty, if you go for that kind of thing.

Quartermaster knives are actually pretty good. I have heard that Jared West can be absolutely unbearable to talk to, though.

One thing to note, while Jared is not officially with Quartermaster, he did give them the design for the Murdock directly, and many of the other knives share the same design. Really, Quartermaster is just taking the Tough Tony (Mantis knife) and making it a real knife, not one made entirely of lies.

Too many question marks (and one big exclamation point from Warren Thomas) for me to deal with Quartermaster. I'm not condemning anyone who does deal with them, but shipments from China, allegations of design theft and just general hints of dishonesty make me very wary. I dig some of their designs and hopefully they resolve these issues (and pay Warren Thomas for his work), but there are too many reputable companies out there for me to justify dealing with them at this time.

I'm thinking this is the address of his Texas knife factory.

Jase? Ha ha ha, what a tool. He's to scared to use his real name, says a lot. You should put a stop on the card, and say that you never bought a knife from Jared West.

One thing to note, while Jared is not officially with Quartermaster,...

While Jared hasn't out and out claimed Quartermaster as his company, it's definitely his. It's the reason his father cited for firing him from Mantis (he started a competing company with designs "stolen" from Mantis).

Now I'm not trying to say QTRM5TR are junk or anything, I've got a QTR-5tt and it's well built and when I had an issue I was taken care of promptly, but to try and deny Jared as the founder and owner of Quartermaster seems silly given the facts.

Was he wearing eyeliner too?

Maybe it's maybelline... He was probably toting that laser-guided turd knife that was going to "revolutionize" the knife industry as we know it.

QTRmeister knives do have a certain je ne sais quoi to them though. I can't put my finger on what it is.:rolleyes::D

Damn, that's pretty nuts that he won't even use his real name out in public.

Sketch city right there.

Lol, maybe he's actually Bat Man in real life. ;)

Have you ever seen the two of them in the same room? Coincidence, I think not.

I won't deny that Jared is almost absolutely the head, or pretty damn high up in Quartermaster, but since he is not officially with them saying he is is speculation. Not unfounded speculation, but it is possible he is just a designer for them, and is otherwise barely affiliated with the company.

lol, so much intrigue. The knife community loves some drama :p

They are also very quick to jump to conclusions are cast the first stone. Sadly, that is how the internet works now, you are sentenced to death by the community before even half the story is out.

Like sand through the hourglass, so are the says of our knives.

With class acts like Sal Glesser, A.G. Russell, and Chris Reeve running respectable knife companies, it baffles me why anybody would willingly give their money to scum like Jared West, Mickey Burger, or Robert Young Pelton.
