jb4570 did you get a deer or elk this year?

Hey jb4570. If you got a deer or elk what buck knife
did you use on it.
Jeff:rolleyes:

Hi Jeff,

I just got back in town late today after 10 days in the field. Wow it was a great time with my kids. We almost had 100% success;) . My son-in-law got a nice forky on opening day, my eldest son got a very nice 3/4 western count (not including eye guards), my youngest son got his first buck ever:D a little forky, I got a nice forky, and my youngest daughter missed a 3/3 that would have been her first ever buck:o (my fault I should have had her out shooting more before the season started).

Well the trip started off with me giving both of the little ones a new Buck 119 :D . They were wearing those knives the whole trip and only took them off before climbing into their bed rolls:D .

I used a brand new Cabelas AG 110 with the nice red wood handle. All I can say is wow, what a knife. It field dressed and skinned all four deer and only needed to be sharpened after I capped out the youngest sons deer for a English mount. It only took a few strokes with the med & fine stones from my Lansky set to have it hair popping sharp again. I would recomend you hunters get some Buck knives with their premium steel blades.....they work grrrreeat  .

I did use the Alpha folder a little and it worked as expected and felt fine in my hand. My son wanted me to start the field dressing of his deer with his new 119. After cutting the hide the blade was so dull it could not cut through the muscle/membrane on the stomach  the blade edge rolled :thumbdn:. I'm not sure why this happened but I fixed that with the Lansky set.

Thats great Jb 4570. It sounds like you had a good hunt and family time.
You are a lucky man. The AG 110 did a good job for you , did it. I am
not sure what the A.G. part is. Glad you are back. Thanks for your report.

It's a GREAT knife.

John...
Welcome home and thanks for the cool report of the family and knives.
Where did you go?

Hi Goose,

We were at X6B zone in the Plumas National Forest. X6B has the best of all worlds for mule deer habitat; from open sage brush covered canons to thick pine tree forest.

California is not an easy place to hunt successfully on Public land. Often to many hunters and not enough bucks. CA has to many politics for the Department of Fish & Game to be able to maintain good buck to doe ratios. However, The X zones have very limmited amount of tags issued.....so the hunting in those zones is often better and less crowded.

I saw more bucks this year than I have in the last 21 years combined. There were spike bucks all over the place. Next year the hunting will also be great if the winter is not to severe. To bad I will not get drawn for that zone for the next 2 - 3 years as I get preference points for not getting drawn......but, that will allow all those spikes to grow into nice big bucks:D . The kids and I saw two bears......But, in the X zones bear season starts the second week of the deer season.....as always "a day late and a dollar short" I have a bear tag too. We saw the last bear on Friday evening and the season was to start on Saturday  ....Oh well He was a nice fat blond color bear and would have weighed about 300 - 350 lbs :D (bear is my favorite tasting wild game). Well I've got to go clean up all of my camping/hunting gear :o .

I saw NO DEER this year. There were spike bucks all over the place on the fire place mantel. Next year the hunting will also be poor if the winter is not to severe. To bad I will not get drawn for that zone for the next 2 - 3 years as I get preference points for not getting drawn......but, that will allow me to load some shells and buy more buck Knives:D . That's a very realistic statement for so many of the game management units here in northern Colorado:thumbdn: :( :thumbdn:. The Buck that I took last year had CWD and I could not believe it...it was big and heathly looking but came back positive. All that meat(and work!!!) gone to feed caged cougars at CSU:grumpy:. They fed it to the cougars???????????

They fed it to the cougars???????????

The DOW Northeast Region HQs is located in Ft. Collins, as is Colorado State University. They have a vet teaching hospital and in a co-operiative effort to explore the effects of CWD on other animals the DOW had several cougars in captivity and were feeding the CWD meat to them to see if it has any effect ot is transfer through the food(deer being the main staple of the cougars diet). The vets/students from the teaching hospital were over-seeing the test. Preston
