Hi all, I was thinking of trading a Camillus CUDA Damascus (spear point) for a JD Smith Spyderco. I can't seem to find out much about this knife ....your thoughts???

I always liked the sleek, classy look of the Smith collaboration but it never really recieved the attention it deserves.
The original version had an ATS34 blade but it has recently been retooled and the newer release features VG-10.
If you are a user the VG-10 is definately the way to go,
however,if you are a collector, try to find the discontinued ATS34 model.

The original JD Smith was discontinued for a reason, namely QC problems. If you want a rarity for rarity's sake, and you don't mind a very high priced ATS-34 & G10 lockback with relatively sloppy production, then go for it. I dumped mine at the first opportunity.

In my most honest opinion (Sorry Sal!), the new version will be too highly priced as a lockback to compete well, and will be discontinued after it's first run also. That will at least be a collectors' item that's got upgraded materials and improved execution.

I'm a fan of the Jd Smith design also. Haven't held one of the new versions yet. I do vaguely remember the price seeming a bit high.

It is a nice design, elegant and utilitarian. Too bad they put the clip on the wrong end.
