Sorry if this has come up before, but I thought I'd ask my specific question. I'm looking for some good quality, tough blue jeans. I used to wear Lee Dungarees, and they'd last and last, but now even the ones new on the store shelf have holes/tears in them, especially down the fronts of the legs (thigh area mostly). I have tried Wrangler, Levis, and Dickies and all get holes in the upper corners of both back pockets after 2-3 weeks of wearing them.

I am merely using them as my everyday pants, no real brutal hard work. They just seem to wear out in the seat from sitting on them. I am not really looking for anything other than blue jeans, although I know there are ripstop, canvas, etc. type pants out there that may take more abuse. I've also thought about sewing in my own reinforcement, but for one, I don't know how to sew. Two, I don't want to have to take the time to do that.

Does anyone out there still make heavy duty jeans that won't crap out right away? And I have no problem ordering from a specialty maker of sorts on the internet, or finding a large brand name, so long as it works. I should also add my first choice is cargo jeans, followed by carpenters, or anything that has more than just the basic pockets.

Thanks all!

I've had good luck with Carharrt brand. They are known for their "duck" material jeans, but their blue denim is very durable. They even make double-front denim logger jeans. Since trying Carharrt about 10 years ago, I have not worn anything else.

I've been contemplating trying Carhartt, just didn't know if they were real quality or hype. I'll probably end up trying a pair since they'll likely be easiest to find in-store. I'd love to hear more ideas too, unless everyone else chooses Carhartts also. :)

I'm a welder and I have a hard time wearing out my Carhartt Bibs in two or three weeks. What are you doing to your jeans? I have an Iron Worker buddy who buys cheap jeans cuz he was always wearing out the thighs laying rebar all day. He'd wear them for a week or two and throw them out.
I'd suggest Carhartt also. They're the best out there.

I like Carhart for cold weather work clothes and I can imagine that their jeans would wear well also, but as long as I can buy 2 pairs of Wranglers for the price of one pair of Carharts,I'll stick with Wranglers.I've worn Wranglers for a long time and driving truck and sliding in and out of a seat a few times a day,I don't think I've ever worn out the seat on pair of them.I usually wear the front of the leg out, above the knee, then cut them off and wear them another year or 2 as shorts.:D

I'm not sure what I'm doing to them that I wear them out so fast :(

All I mentioned in the original post seem to be thin, cheap material. For some reason, EVERY one of them I've tried - and I've tried multiple pairs of each - develop holes from wear after no more than 14-21 days of regular, normal use. I don't do any hard labor with them...just everyday use to keep me from being naked :D. Like I said, the holes typically develop at the upper corners of the back pockets, and with "runs" in the thigh area. It's not like I'm wearing them that tight either; they're mostly relaxed fit. And other than my wallet on occasion, I don't keep anything in the back pockets.

Anywho...anyone ever hear of www.pointerbrand.com (just stumbled on it with Google)?

That's why rodmen should wear chaps. Carharts are good jean but thick/stidd until worn in.

One of the off brands that WalMart sells, I think they are Faded Glory, are way thicker and better built than most jeans. Best part is they're only about $12 a pair. I do have to say if you're having problems with your jeans tearing at the corners of your back pockets maybe try a looser cut that won't put so much stress on that area when you are sitting.

Those sound to be worth a look. Actually I do wear them pretty loose. My waist is a 36 and I typically buy a 38 and use a belt. It helps a bit but they still wear quickly.

I'm a denimhead and I will say without a doubt Levis makes the best product at the pricepoint. Levis 501xx STF jeans are the best you can get in my opinion. I wear them everyday. They are raw so you just gotta wash em once when you get them and try not to wash them too much after that. They will actually fade to your body naturally. It is all the old timers would wear. Raw denim means it has never been washed or shrunken or anything. They are fresh from the dye and are nice and rough. Once you break them in there is nothin like it. Because they aren't put through harsh wash cycles and such they last much longer!

I have a pair of 395 dollar jeans (got em secondhand though for cheap) and I still love to wear my 501 stfs.

I'll have to keep my eye out for those too (the 501s, not the $395 jeans :p). Thanks for the tip!

Pick up a pair of carpenters jeans instead of the regular. I really like the way the last pair I got are wearing. From Wallyworld

I prefer Wranglers because they're good quality for me at a good price, but if you can get Carhartt's cheap, they're excellent.

I think we all need to email the major blue jean companies and complain about the product they put out as new. They look and feel worn out when bought and whats with the baggy stuff? They are blue jeans companies, right? How about a nice regular pair of carpenter pants? Not the ones they sell now with tree trunk leg cuts.
