Anyone have any experience with these? Seems to be a viable alternative, although I have not had good luck with Jeep in the past.

There was a write up in Car and Driver not too long ago on it. They basically said the diesel had the same performance as the V-6 5 speed they had tested previously. Same acceleration, same towing capacity. If I remember right they got 20mpg vs 16mpg with the v-6 they had previously tested. Of course real mileage would probally be better because they drive the snot out of them for the test. On the downside they also said that the diesel was one of the most noisy clattering modern diesel engines they had tested. I know most modern diesels are pretty quiet, my friend has a 2005 3/4 GMC with a Duramax diesel and its almost as quiet as a gas engine. The diesel on the Liberty is about a $3,000 option I think.

Personally if I wanted a Liberty and was concerned about gas mileage I would get the 2.4L 4 cylinder manual, I think it's switching to a 6-speed for 2006. It would save a lot of money up front for a small loss in acceleration and towing (I doubt many people buy a Liberty to tow with anyway). And it's rated at 20mpg city and 24 highway.

ymmv (literaly)
