I was lucky enough to receive one of Jeff Harkins Tritons with the aluminum splash anodized handle in the black with turquoise motif and satin finished blade.
I have been looking forward to receiving it for a long time and it finally arrived. I have received many custom knives, but this was the first time that my hand was trembling as I opened the box. A nice padded zippered case inside has gold lettering "Harkins Knives Triton"- very simple for such a knife. Inside the padded case, the knife was wrapped in black felt. This knife is as close to perfect as I could imagine in a knife-custom or production. I guess that we are calling this one production.
You have seen the photos, but they do not do this knife justice. It is simply breathtaking! I admired all sides of the knife inspecting it carefully for any occlusions in the finish and checking the seams of the two sides and found no aberrations. I am not posting photos mainly because I am too lazy to drag out the camera and mess with it and also becuase I am too busy flicking the switch back and forth.
You push the sliding switch forward and the blade comes out forcefully and locks up solidly. The mechanism sounds very tight in opening, closing, and while it is is closed when you shake it- nothing loose about this auto. Pulling the switch back retracts the blade as fast as opening. It is the coolest auto that I have handled. I currently own a LUDT Splash with black blade and the Triton finish is better and it locks up more solidly-and I love my Microtechs!
When open, there is no noticeable vertical play in the blade and negligible lateral play and Bud says that even this minute play is not acceptable to Jeff Harkins- he is trying to eliminate ALL play in the blade-perfectionist!
The blade has a perfect satin finish. The grind lines on the double edged dagger blade are perfect-even under the loupe, which is no easy feat.
This knife is simply an outstanding effort by Jeff Harkins! I own a Halo II, Combat Talon, and a Nemesis and this exceeds all three knives. As I click open and then closed, I can't help but wonder how the mechanism works and I look at the screws contemplating opening her up and checking it out, but I am afraid that I wouldn't be able to get it back together so I guess that I will leave it screwed together- for now!
I do not plan on carrying it very much, but I did take it to work since they have been hearing about this thing for the past 6 months or more and all were very impressed. The finish appeals to the women and the operation appeals to the men!
Many thanks to Jeff Harkins and Bud Angelo.
