I just got all 4 of my videos yesterday. I am starting with Jeff's first.

I am going REAL slow, so I can see what is happening.

Right now, I have gotten through the first 3 opening techniques. First, the simple flip open, is pretty easy for me.

But, the second two, the drop open and the ice pick open, I am having trouble with. He even said the drop open was one of the fastest ways, but, when I try, and try, etc...my thumb on the safe side ALWAYS is in the way, and I cannot catch the other handle coming up. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

My hand is holding the safe side, so how do I get my had situated such that I can catch the upcoming other handle. These openings look relly cool, and are fast, but I am just as stuck, almost, as I was with the books.

Can anyone help???????

TIA,

Just keep trying.....You have to move the knife from holding it by the fingers to holding it by the thumb as the handle comes around.

Also, if you have trouble with a specific technique, skip it! Try the next one. You'll come back to that troublesome one later and maybe then the other techniques will have boosted either your confidence or your dextarity enough to make that difficult one easy.

The icepick drop opening is tricky, but it will come to you. Make a big slow circle with your hand, toward your torso and then away from yourself, when you are first learning it, and let the circle get smaller and faster as you master the grip change. Concentrate on keeping that thumb out of the way.

Thanks, all great advice. I'm gonna try and get through all of the video this weekend, althouth I KNOW I won't master all of the moves.

This guy seems like a really nice guy too. I wish I knew more about him. I am very new to the asian arts, and although I don't think I am limber enough, young enough, or strong enough anymore, I still love watching it!!

That is on reason it is great to be able to share with you guys: you guys can acutally do this martial arts stuff!! More power to you. I think I have what it takes mentally, but I don't think I could get my 35 yo body to do what this 18 yo mind wants it to

Ciao for now...

Well, I know now that when you age you see things from different perspectives. I do, though, feel old.

My wife is divorcing me, I haven't seen my kids in 2 MONTHS, and life generally sucks. That is why I feel old.

But............there are always knives (which my wife never understood in the first place)

Ciao!

Well:

I just finished watching the first half of Jeff Imada's video. I guess he would call the maneuvers he was doing as basic. I stopped the tape there, so that I can now get a feel for and practice with, my Balisong.

Also, do you know anyone selling BM 42's right now? New is preferred, but I would even like a used Bali.

Thanks guys,

Hey,I feel like I'm old & decrepit myself..but that's what stress, ulcers and a reckless youth can do to you over the years.Yet,I can still do some workouts..even with my asthma.

Ok,here's a trick I taught a few people for learning a new move.Use the opposite hand to guide the bite handle thru the motions it's supposed to go thru. This helps your primary hand learn where it's going to need to exert control and where it's going to need to go with the flow. You may need to have someone there to help stop and back up the tape so that you can easily catch every step of the knife's movements.
Also, you can watch the tape over and over and get the mental picture of what the knife is ti do.Then, once you've got the complete picture, you can easily seperate the whole move into steps. In this way,you can go thru and practice step by step and step after step until you can piece the whole thing together properly.
These methods do work quite well.People that I've taught in person have managed to use these methods to learn some of my complicated little moves, and even for the basics. But,you'd be surprised how few people do think of using the spare hand to help out,or seperating the move into a small pieces.
I hope these methods will help you out with learning the art of the bladed yo-yos

Lundo.. I used to have a problem with the ice pick stuff too.. there can be numerous problems.. one is you might have trouble chanigng grip you have to learn how to grip the safe handle with the innser part of your index finger and the inner part of your thumb.with ytou thumb grippign along the handle.. using your thumb itself to grip the handle instead of your palm shodul work..

also if you flip the blade in a counter clockwise motion and dont get it try flipping it clockwise and vice versa.. this is how most of my friends 'get it' the counter or clockwose motion change.. like folding yrou arms it is different with each person.. sometimes it is easier to do a clockwise sometimes counter..

where in Pgh are you from?

It's like a yo-yo. Takes practice.

The www.balisong.com has load files that show the moves from two perspectives. You can slow the file down or stop it at each point.

Like any motor skill, you need to walk through the steps slowly at first and build a "kinetic" pattern in your body for the motion. Just like you don't think about signing your name or shifting gears in the car. Musicians learn the passage slowly and then build on the tempo. Once you learn the motions, speed will come . . .

Sorry, that was supposed to be "meet", not "meat". Really, no puns at all intended...althouth it is pretty funny though.

I did manage to get bitten practicing the ice pick drop this weekend; right in the center of my right palm. Like they say, now I really own my BM 42.......

Ciao!

Where in Pittsburgh are some of you knife lovers?????
