Jeff,

Just curious if you guys have ever spent any time in Panama. I know you have been to Colombia, which is right beneath Panama. I've spent quite a bit of time in Panama...lived there for awhile. Much of the country is civilized, but it does have some jungles too. The part that borders Colombia is dangerous because of the guerrillas. Anyway, just curious if you guys have spent any time there.

Not anything to speak of. Touched the border and that's about it. Robert Pelton was kidnapped by AUC on the Colombia/Panama border though. AUC is now defunct since Carlos Castano is dead. All the remnants are just playing with drugs now.

Yeah, I heard that supposedly the AUC has still made some threats since then...but who knows... Thanks for answering my question. Just got RYP's book with my H.E.S.T. knife...looking forward to reading it. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

Great country to travel in. The beaches are nice, the volcanos are nicer! I loved getting into the mountains and out of the tropical heat. There is a very cool Swiss style village near Volcan Baru in the western part of Panama as well.

Don't thank me. Thanks for asking! Anything to do with Latin America has my full interest and I can talk all day about it. I love that part of the world. Knives are just an everyday job. In fact, knives came from us being in LA, so they will always take a back seat. ;)

Speaking of Panama. While we were in Colombia we visited the training base and a new international class of Junglas was just starting. A lot of Panamanians in this class.

Yeah, but Mike Perrin was the only one truly cammo'd in this photo :D

Those are some bad dudes that the Junglas will be fighting.

I stayed with some indigenous folks in Panama for a month or so and the stories they had about what these drug cartels would do to them.........just horrible.

Again, I think if you look at the last few years you will see that the guerilla movement is losing steam. No doubt there are some wickedly bad dudes with the FARC and the Paras but I think if other SA countries would stay out of helping them we would see them dwindle away much faster.

Yeah, you are right about that. A lot of the problem is on the Panama/Colombia border, in Darien. Most of the Panamanians can't even go there...it's too dangerous because of the guerrillas. All in all though, it's not too bad of a place other than a couple of areas.

I got to just cross into Costa Rica, but didn't spend too much time there. I would love to visit other LA countries as well. Most of the people are very friendly and accommodating and love to talk to Americans ( or I guess I should say, people from the U.S.) Panama has a strong U.S. influence because of the invasion so they use a lot of our words...it's kinda funny sometimes to hear them talking and randomly throw one of our words in the sentence, lol.

They use the American dollar too, which makes it real nice to do anything. Because of that and the fact that the capital, Panama City, is like an American city...great place for folks to retire...dollar goes a little bit further than here ;-)

I was in a couple areas where we didn't have running water so we drank Pipa juice. It's basically like a green coconut. Cut off just enough of the outside with a machete to get to the soft middle, then drink out the sweet water...awesome if you get one cold. Then you can make a spoon with the shell and eat the soft part of the coco...good stuff :-)

I'll have to check vacationing there maybe next year...thanks.

You'd enjoy it; it really is a cool place. Hopefully, I'll be going back next year as well.

If you go, try to spend a couple hours at the Panama Canal. It really is an amazing sight to see how much water goes in so fast to raise up the ships...pretty cool.

Be careful when drinking too much of that stuff.........it's a cocktail for candy apple splatters. It isn't that you will get a bug, it's just that the juice can act as a laxative. Heck, coconut juice when combined with mamones.............WATCH OUT NOW. They taste great, but they can make your bathroom time interesting.

LOL! You speak the truth! 'Course, too much of any juice or fruit can give ya the runs :p.

Those mamones are good too and so are mamones chinos. Got to be careful though...they stain.
