Folks,
When I went to Chicago a year ago, I had the chance to meet and talk to Jeffrey Harkins in person. I had handled a few of his incredible knives for a photo client, and that got me VERY interested in his work.
We ended with a handshake and an order, which he fulfilled for me at this past Chicago show. (He was ready to deliver by Blade, but I wasn't pressing.) It was the only knife that came back with me, but boy, did it ever fill my desires!
Let's see:
A closer look:
The specs:
ATS 34 - 3¼" Blade 7½" OAL
416 heat-treated SS scales
Ebony inlays w/24kt gold pins
The ebony and pins were something I wished for: I wanted the marriage of ultra-hi-tech precision and old-world warm materials. Jeffrey was glad to oblige, and after he showed it to me at the begining of the Chicago Show, I allowed him to table it for the remaining two days. He had to BEAT the onlookers off with a stick, as everyone kept coming back to this one as if it were available.
I don't have to tell you how many knives I handle regularly from clients and a website dealer. That said, I have NEVER handled anything *more* precise and well made. (Equal to, but not more. It is EQUAL to Michael Walker's in this regard alone. And that's saying something. )
The smooth action and solid lock and close is a thing of joy to feel. Each of the facets are hand-stoned to get a superfine satin-rubbed finish. He polished the front and rear bevels in the handle for distinction. The edges define 'crisp'. The butt end is as sharp as the tip. There is no compromise on chamfering--this knife makes no apologies for it's hard points.
Anyway, I couldn't be more pleased, and since I had so many other clients to finish up from Chicago, I took my time getting back to this one.
Feel free to look at more of Jeffrey's work at his website: www.customknives.net
Thanks for looking!
