Hello all,

I am curious about the difficulty that I had with the Jelly Roll. Rolling the bar into the Roll was not the hard part of the process. What I had difficulty with was taking that sucker under the powerhammer (even though I barely kissed it).

The roll just kept opening up on the outside last loop on one side of the roll when I was welding. I got ticked off and just said to heck with it and just formed it into an oblong bar to get a good weld, then accordian cut it for a neck knife instead of it's original intent: bolster material.

I seen it done on a CD but the person always used a hydraulic press. Man, does my pocket hurt now..... I just purchased a powerhammer...guess Santa will have to tug a press down that chimney next year.

Well, just curious if anyone has any tips on keeping the roll from buckeling and opening on one side.

thanks

:D Thats beacuse you used jelly instead of custard. :D Lets hit the forge and figure it out. How about using welding temps while rolling ??? Like I do when I twist. Weld as you go. It might not start out round but with careful hammering it should look like a cigar.

Roll it up as tight as possible, bring the whole thing up to a good welding heat, and start right next to the seam, light blows are par for the course on this first part of the weld (and hand hammering)

The first blow should be where the arrow is, and light blows should continue while turning the roll away from the seam (so that it's the last thing you hit.) this will tighten up everything in the roll, and leave you with a round jelly roll, you'll probably have to take another welding heat, and clean up the weld so that you can make sure it's solid before you start drawing it in the power hammer.

Just my experience, but it's always worked for me.

Good info already. I've welded jelly rolls on the Power hammer but it's tricky and better done by hand but I've found the easy way to weld one is using squaring dies on the press. This pushs everything to the center from four sides and welds up solid.

I had trouble getting the darn thing to roll up in the first place! Sure with we could rename that stuff. It's such a unique pattern, it deserves a far more scientific or professional name than "Jelly Roll".

Thanks everyone.......

I will give the bead welding a try... I had a really nice weld when I was finished with the hammer before I went to the powerhammer....

Just need more practice on that sucker. But oh well... I tried JD's method from the video I bought of his (where he used the press)... I am going to square fold it, weld it, then start to round the sucker with controlled bursts from the Giant. That way it will be easier that way without the press... but it is on my list in the near future....

Daniel......
