There seems to be a good deal of interest about this movie here at W&SS, so I thought I would point out that it is on AMC tonight (Thurs 3/11/10) at 8:00p.

Other than the repeated attacks from wild animals and Indians, the real risk of starvation, and the brutal slaying of loved ones, it seems that Jeremiah (Robert Redford) has a swell time out in the wilderness.

And there ain't no laws for the brave ones! And there ain't no asylums for the crazy ones! And there ain't no churches, except for this right here! And there ain't no priests excepting the birds. By God, I are a mountain man, and I'll live 'til an arrow or a bullet finds me. And then I'll leave my bones on this great map of the magnificent...

What a movie. One of my favorites...

You also might read the book, "Liver Eating Johnson", Or research the history of the man the book and movie was based on. It might be too brutal of a movie to be made today, but the actual life was an amazing survival story.

Yes, one of my favorites. Just picked up the DVD the other day for $9-10. I remember after seeing this movie for the first time, I went out and bought my first gun, a "hawkin" style muzzle loader. :D

Kin you skin griz?

I still have yet to see this. I missed it during the Christmas break, but I found it at Wallyworld for $5 a couple of weeks ago.

Now to find the time to actually watch TV!

I own the DVD but I'll probably watch it anyway. Thanks.

You turn down this gift, and they'll slit you, me, Caleb and the horses from crotch to eyeball with a dull deer antler!

His reply to Del Que is one of my all time favorite movie quotes....

"Jeremiah, maybe you best go down to a town, get outta these mountains."

"I've been to a town, Del."

I guess I was fortunate when I was younger - we spent a couple of days watching this in my history class during my senior year of high school - and 'The Sands of Iwo Jima' too!
