Jerry made this bad boy for a collector in China. I read somewhere that as the market for very high end custom knives has cooled off a little in the US, it has also picked up in China. With this blade's destination in mind I opted for a somewhat different background. Edged tools and weapons have been appreciated in all cultures since the beginning. The background image is from the famous 6,000 clay warriors found in the ancient tomb of China's first emperor during approximately 200-300 AD.
The OAL is just shy of 18 inches. Blade is 12 3/4 inches tip to guard and features a wicked single-bevel recurved clip. Clam shell S guard, extensive deep relief engraving, highly colored fossil mammoth handle and plenty of gold accompany the dog-star damascus steel blade to make for an impressive bowie style knife. And it fits neatly into an elegant Paul Long sheath - black vegtan leather, black shark skin and black croc hide.

Wow, that is beautiful. Everything about it looks just right. A fantastic addition to any collection.

WOW! Amazing knife, sheath, and great pictures.....the whole nine yards. ;)

There are three Masters evident in the photo.

Jerry's steel, especially this 'dogstar' pattern (right?), is SO compelling. His choice of ivory, the skillful and embellishing engraving, and the usage of his clam-shell guards (with finished undersides ;)) are exemplary.

Paul's leather work has become so 'standard' that it's easy to overlook how completely skillful and artistic his left-brain is working. :)

Buddy, YOUR work stands away from all of us who also shoot knives for a profession. That eyegrabbing visual of the knife hovering and shooting away is not just captivating, but impossible to show with a single click. It only looks easy.

Good thread.

Yes Coop, Dogstar.

I find the US market for High-end custom knives "good" as is such in China and no wonder with amazing examples as pictured above being created.
IMO, Jerry leads the pack in Big Southwest Bowies.

Appreciate the comments and I'm sure Jerry and Paul do too. Hopefully Jerry will chime in when he returns from a brief respite fishing 'down on the river.' Hope Paul will as well.

Coop - you're too kind my friend. To be fair I don't shoot anywhere near the number of knives you do. And I just retired from my day job this year. Plus my wife goes off to her job every day. Therefore I can get away with wasting endless hours stitching 6 or 7 exposures to get an in-focus perspective shot like that one in the upper left. As long as I shower, shave and have some food on the table by 5:30 she'll never know. "How was your day, Buddy"? The right answer is always "Busy, how 'bout yours"? 😉

Kevin, I'm with you on the market here in the US. It seems strong. What's changed is that custom knives have become a world-wide phenomenon! It may also be possible that those who feel the US market has 'cooled' may not yet - how to say this - be ready to think globally. 🌎🌍🌏

Beautifully done, Buddy. You captured the essence of the knife. Jerry did a hell of a job on this one for sure.

Coop, thanks, my friend. You are very gracious, and you always make me feel like I am better than I really am.

Paul

Thanks to Buddy and Paul for always doing their part so well.
It is always fun to work on the larger size pieces for me. I hope he enjoys it.
This one had a lot of gold, even the escutcheon plate is 1/8 inch thick of 24kt.

Your engraving design and engraving execution skills always keep getting better and better. Sounds strange, considering how marvelous they always are to begin with. Certain types and styles of engraving don't fit with certain types of knives. Your style fits your Bowies superbly. Great piece. China gains.

Oh my... now there's something you don't see every day. Great shot of an outstanding knife, Buddy.

I am so pleasure to have this knife. Since my working schedule I couldn't attend the knife show in June. You have lots fans in China . We are very interesting your knife working. My knife is still in The USA. I need to find the chance to send back to China
Thanks again Jerry for making the amazing knife for me.

I was wondering doesn't something like that fall into the 管制刀具 regulations? Are you able to apply for a permit, did you ask Mr. Fisk blunt the edge so it falls under the art exemption or is there another way to get a larger knife through customs? I'd really like to know since i'd like to try making a big bowie some day but not run into any legal problems if i want to take it back to the USA some day.

Wow.. just an another master piece from the legendary living maker... congrats.
