OK, it's been a few years now. If anyone out there has a Spyderco Hossom Forager that they've beat the hell out of, please tell me how it held up. Thanks.

I own the smallest and the largest of this group, I can't remember the names given them. They have held up very well over the last couple of years. The smaller knife has even gone diving with me in the Pacific ocean recently.

I have only had one serious session with the Forrester, the largest of the clan.
After sharpening the edge to my liking I took 'er on a test run.
My session consisted of 20ish minutes of wailing on a very hard, dead log.
It still cut paper after the hackfest.
Surprised the hell out of me...

^^Good to know, I bought the Forester on sale for $125 NIB a couple months back but haven't had a chance to really use it yet. I wasn't planning to get one but when I saw the price compared to what they normally go for I had to get it.

I have the largest and smallest (Forrester and Dayhiker) as well. The factory edges are very thick and can take a lot of abuse.

I thinned out both a bit (the Dayhiker a lot) and no issues with normal to hard use. My wife borrowed the Forrester, but even when she hit some rocks while hacking shrubbery there was only slight edge rolling.

I think I got both for about $200 which is a steal. Great fit and finish on both, but the Forrester sheath could have had better retention.

I agree about the fit and finish, they're really nice knives. My sheath is pretty secure though.

My Dayhiker sheath is great, but the Forrester sheath I have isn't shaped as well around the handle. Might heat it and reshape it a bit;)

I'm happy with the sheath and the quality of my Forrester seems to be high.
The balance is perfect for me, it doesn't feel very heavy for its size and it just feels right in the hand.
To be honest, I think I prefer it over my Busses. The steel may not be INFI, but I don't see me breaking the N690Co blade of the Forrester even under hard use.
This is one of my favorite blades, for sure.

Is everyone keeping the thick convex edge or trying something else? I don't normally do convex and prefer V edges, and I've been contemplating re-bevelling my Dayhiker.

To be honest I'd like to keep the convex edge as I've been told it's better for larger choppers. That said I'm not too sure how to sharpen this blade since it has the re-curve. I know about the mouse pad and sandpaper method of sharpening convex blades but I've never tried it, far less on a re-curve.

I'll have to do some Google and/or You Tube searches on the subject.

I rolled it on the sharpmaker to make it convex. Eventually I got a technique down that seemed to work.
I wanted to keep the cutting theory as Hossom intended, and it works well.
Don't think a V bevel is a great idea in this application, but I'm no expert.

Convex here. Works great and I maintain it using a strop.

Works with the sharpmaker as well.

Don't quote me on this, I could easily be wrong.
I forget where I read it, but I believe it was Mr. Hossom talking about people asking about the convex edge.
He made it that way for a reason. Who am I to argue with the Hossom's chopper theory?
I tried to just refine the factory edge and leave it stout.
For a metal that's basically VG10 (correct me if I'm wrong) it holds its edge FAR better than any other VG10 blade that I have. Must be that workhorse, convex edge... I'd guess.

Thanks everyone. I don't really know why some Spyderco FB's like this pass into the land of the dead with nary a whimper. Maybe it was the unusual steel that tossed people for a loop. Anyway, these blades NIB are about half or less on the tag when first out, and are quite attractive now.
