Yes i know it is illegal to carry a switchblade here, but i feel as though my collection is incomplete without at least one auto in it, only problem is i cant find any places that will sell one to me. Witch leads me to this question, Is it completely illegal to own a switchblade or auto knife period in nj?
This is a pretty talked about subject and i have searched it up, but there doesn't seem to be any mention to purchase.
Butterfly knives are completely illegal to carry here but i can still purchase from places who are reputable dealers perfectly fine even though it is a felony to carry it here, i have talked to people (cops and what not) and everyone gives a different answer but it always ends with something similar to, if its on your property and your using it in the privacy of your home it is a different story. That and seeing that butterfly knives are illegal but places still ship them to here, but no one will ship a automatic here without credentials?

So is it 100% illegal to have a auto shipped to you inside jersey if your not leo or Military (im not im just a kid with a knife obsession and right now i have a itch for a auto, have for a while but it has proven nearly impossible to get my hands on one)? I have came across a guy who disassembles autos and ships them in parts to you and claims that it is completely legal that way (he charges 15$ extra for any knife to take it apart and ship it) to ship it anywhere in the world because its not assembled and working.

Is that the only way that it could be passable to get it into the state? Is there something i dont know of, Any of you fellow jersey boys out there have any experience with purchasing a auto or anywhere even selling you a auto?

Again i know this is already talked about why they are illegal here, but i already know that, just looking more into a collection only not carried auto.

I assume you read this:

The sale of them is illegal for sure. Possession in most cases means anywhere you have the item. When the wording "by any person" is added it means on your person. but the general term includes your home too. It seems that having one anywhere is illegal in NJ. Ask a local DA for the best answer. I also see you are a "teen" correct? Law enforcement focuses on males from 15 to 25 more than any other group of people, so doing anything questionable at your age will bring you the most attention....

Yea I'm 19, I think it's best if I just stay away from autos, maybe the law will change some day, maybe ill move once I'm older. Never know, I could always get an assisted knife to have the spring opening, I know that they are okay here, I been carrying my buck vantage lately, I had a cop question me about it while I was out yesterday, he asked to see it and I handed it to him and he looked at it for a minute opened it closed it handed it back and said make sure you're careful and responsible and it isn't a problem.

I asked what does he mean and he says as long as I'm not involved in any sort of violent conflict or dispute with anyone or threatening anyone's well being that its acceptable to carry a sub 4 inch blade knife on you're everyday tasks and you have a reasonable reason. Ex. Work (witch is what I said I have it for to open boxes), but self defense is not an acceptable reason because it involves you owning the knife for the intent to cause harm to others and if you use that excuse it is at the officers discretion to confiscate the "weapon" and take the proper legal action.

He went on to say that a locking knife is legal and it is fine for you to carry it but some officers may have a problem with it and try to hassle you and they will take advantage of it of you don't know your rights. Went on to say a slip joint would be the best but a 3-3.5 inch blade locking blade iS acceptable.

New Jersey Illegal - State Code: Code of Criminal Justice - 2C:39-3 Illegal - State Code: Code of Criminal Justice- 2C:39-3e]

Hope this helps. Know they are cool, but in addition to being illegal, they will screw up at the wrong time. For the same kick, try an assisted opening knife. A well made assisted opening frame lock is not likely to let you down.
