I love a jersey pattern as much as the next guy. There are times when I can't resist picking one up, even if they're not in the best condition. In this state of axe-induced delirium, I always manage to forget how friggin' difficult they can be to hang! Take Charo here, a Kelly Woodslasher that may not win any beauty contests now, but was sure to be gorgeous a decade or so ago (plus she has a great personality). I hung her on a Hickory Handle Store helve, which came a little thicker than my liking right out of the box, but Charo's damn gorgeous lugs just required so much attention! I used a block plane to thin out the helve from the shoulder almost to the throat. A spokeshave would have worked a bit better, but I can't find mine since I clean the workshop. I took a side by side pic to show how much wood I had to remove to seat the head properly, along with some other glamour shots.

Next item on the list is to to put a nice, sharp, shiny smile back on her mug of a bit.

nice work... that looks real nice, but your right, that ol' jersey head want win any 'beauty contest', but the hanging job just might:D
i've hung one jersey and it turned out really nice IMO (need to get pics up, hell i hung it last summer). i recently got 2 pretty nice kelly perfect jerseys, a mann knot klipper and a kentucky keen kutter off flea bay that need hanging. i actually found 3 nice handles on tuesday. they are tennessee hickory 36" with straight handles. a little to long for my taste, but i think i can actually shorten them down and make them work out just fine... the grain on all 3 is fantastic... pics to come soon, once i get ready to start hanging them...

That's a neat job. I usually (but not always) leave about that amount of wood through the eye. I think it gives a good look.
The condition of the head looks about the same as an old Australian Hytest Axe I found under one of my sheds. It's a real pleasure to 'do-up' an old axe. Each time I do I can't help but imagine some Old Timer swinging her in the bush somewhere.

regards...Frank

Thanks guys. It reminds me of the scene in Slap Shot when the team's bus driver starts whacking the side of the bus with an axe and Paul Newman asks him, "What the hell are you doing!?" and the bus driver responds, "Making it look mean!" (I feel the same way about the cracked quarter panel on my Buick.)

Would love to see some pics of your jerseys bear hunter.
